I'm really tempted to build another strat with HH setup and try these- has anyone ever used these?

Pickups I've always wondered about:

Dimarzio Eric Johnson DP211 Neck and DP212 Bridge humbuckers

Dimarzio DP156 Humbucker from Hell

Dimarzio DP200 Steve Morse

Dimarzio DP163 Bluesbucker

I'm also tempted to build a HH strat with Pearly Gates bridge and Pearly Gates Neck.

MGR on the other side of town from me had a set of Dimarzio EJ pickups that they put on clearance. I was tempted to snag them but the extremely low output made me kinda hesitant. They're not much higher in output than vintage single coils.

I have had two guitars with the Steve Morse models. One I no longer have, but I still have the other. The Steve Morse is actually a high output pickup. The bridge version is bright, tight, and hot. It's quite unique in that it is hot, but has a spank and twangy tone to it that reminds my of a Tele bridge pickup. Just a lot hotter. It sounds great doing power chords and riffs, but it has a lot more personality than the typical hot humbucker.

the Steve Morse neck version is fat and really warm. Listen to him soloing on his CD's with the neck pickup on. It's that sound. I think it's pretty similar to the Air Norton.

Alkeys,

I've just one guitar with HBers: A Gibson ES-335 equipped w/ SD 59s. Like you, I'm intrigued by this offering from DiMarzio. Had I a second similar guitar, I'd consider experimenting with the DiMarzio EJ; it seems like a wonderful P/U.

You don't mention your amp(s) or type of music you want to play.

The EJ Customs are fantastic. Bright, articulate, touch of twang. Clean, they are reminiscent of Filtertrons. They can handle BIG gain without overtones hurting your ears. I'm not sure they would be best in a 25.5 inch scale Strat unless the strat was abnormally dark sounding. I think the EJ Customs are awesome in a shorter scale mahogany/maple top axe.

The Bluesbucker did not do it for me. In full HB mode it was ugh. The split sound was a very nice overwound SC sound that was very good clean and wonderful with a bit of overdrive. Again, probably not the way to go.

If you are looking for classic punk/alternative, I think a Jazz neck/bridge combo would be the ticket. For blues, the PG neck and bridge. For classic rock PRS McCartys. For all around versatility, I would go 59n/JB. For shredding, the best combo would be EMG 85/81 (better yet, the 89/81W with splitting) or Air Norton/Air Zone.

Howdy,

Veryhungry: Do you reckon that the DiMarzio EJs would be good in an ES-335? My tastes are vintage 50s & 60s tones through Fender amps and no pedals/ effects.

Eggman,

I have not owned a semi-hollow body since the 70s. Back in my Nugent loving days. :1:

I don't want to lead you astray. My suggestion is to email DMZ's tech regarding that potential set up. Most of the time you get DMZ's lead pup designer, Steve, answering the email.

My gut reaction when you posted the ES -335 is TV Jones or Phat Cats. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Try a Jazz bridge and a Jazz neck. Trust me!
