Tell me what amps you guys use, and why you like them. I am in the process of amp shopping. I will definately play them for myself, but I just want your opinions.

Re: Fave amps

i have a 65 super reverb reisussue that has the sweatest cleans for ever, the only problem is not having any od. now u might tell rself u can get by with a stomp box but u dont miss real amp od like marshalls until u have an amp with none. but if u want the best clean tones though the super reverb kicks ass

Re: Fave amps

For playing Blues/classicRock in a small club My Princeton Reverb is the
ticket :) I can crank it!! all night,It's just loud enuff to cut thru and
NOBODY has ever told me to turn down!! ( I HATE THAT :saeek: )
Unlike when I used to use a 135 watt Twin. All I heard was a chorus
of... Turn it down... Turn it down :blackeye: I geuss I only get my
sound when the power tubes are GLOWING !! :13: So the Princeton
solved that problem.

Re: Fave amps

Being just an at home player I don't need much. With that, I'm using a Peavey Classic 30. I recentley re-tubed it with Eurotubes and installed a Celestion Greenback speaker. Seeing how the two channels share the bass, mid and treble, I set those controls for the OD channel, then run a Boss GE-7 EQ in the loop and adjust accordingly for the clean channel. Works great. For my needs I'm very happy with it. And it can get loud too!!

Re: Fave amps

I've got a Laney VH100R with a matching Laney 4x12 cab (celestion V30's). Can be had brand new for around $900.. someone was selling one used for around $700 in the trading post a while back.

I like it because it has a lot of versatility (read: options), plenty of headroom, and a great overall tone. The sound definately leans a bit to the bright side of the tonal spectrum, but not in a bad way... I think it gives it a bit more of a defined sound than other amps. Through experimenting, I've gotten it to suit a variety of styles, from blues to ska to hard rock. Definately a lesser known amp, but worth checking out if you see one.

Re: Fave amps

Sovtek Mig-60 all tube 60 watt head (pictured in my avatar)

let me start off by saying that if you like all the bells and wistles in an amp, this is not the amp for you. personally i like have all my control in my effects chain.

features:
this amp has 3 12ax7 tubes in the pre-amp and 2 6l6 power tubes in it. there is nothing as far as feature besides the EQ. well... there is one thing. it has two inputs, the "low" input is a very sparkly clean amp sound.. TRUE TUBE TONE HERE.. very fender tube type cleans. the other input is the "high" or high gain channel, very very nice tube distortion, sounds very much like a big muff pi. unique. this is all controlled by a master volume and pre-amp volume. EQ settings include presense, bass, mid, treble. the bare essentials (exactly what i was wanting)

the low channel is comparable to a fender bassman. the high channel is comparable to a JCM 800 with a big muff mixed in (can you imagine?). i love this amp

the one thing is that they are becoming collectors items. they stopped production of the amps in the mid 90's.. sovtek (being electro harmonix's under company) turned to an all tube company, meaning no more amps. so you have to look for these things over the interenet or, even less of a chance, in a pawn or guitar shop (very unlikely)..

OHHH!!.. forgot to mention the best part.. THIS IS ABOUT THE BEST AMP YOU WILL FIND IN THE PRICE RANGE!.. i scored mine for $400, you can find them even cheaper on ebay most of the time. they also come in 50 watt versions (the mig 50) which are a little cheaper in price (and the inputs are plastic too so thats a little iffy) these amps are also going up in price.. i monitored them on ebay for the longest time (contimplaiting whether to get one) you used to be able to get them for as low as $250-$300.. now they are around $400

good thing to look into, especially if your on a budget. i would write more but im sure it would turn into rambling lol

Re: Fave amps

I have a Marshall 900 Combo 50watt, which I A/B with a 69 Silverface Super reverb. For me I believe this combination gives me evrything I need at any given time. I also use Strats, Teles, a LP, and a 335 as my choice of guitars. Through these two amps I get what I need.
However as far as "holy Grails". I would go with a Plexi preferably a 50 watt, but if need be a 100 watt would do. I would look to A/b this with a Tweed twin or Super. Those two Amps are usually not going to have reverb, so I would also need to have a Fender Reverb tank as well. I gave up a long time ago trying to find one Amp that will do it all. If you stop and think about it any of the great recordings that were done always used "multipule" amps. Different amps for different sounds... it just makes sense. DS

Re: Fave amps

I like Deluxe Reverbs and 5E3 tweed style Deluxes. One or two of each please. I like to use a stereo effects box of some kind to split the guitar signal into stereo and then power each amp. A pair of Deluxes (either two DR's or two 5E3's or one of each) is all I need.

Re: Fave amps

I currently use a Fender 59 Bassman RI and a Marshall 50 w. Plexi reissue. I now have the sound I always wanted. I used to have a 66 Bassman piggyback that I really liked (wish I kept it).

Two of the finest amps ever created. I'm fortunate to have one of each of those amps too. The opportunity to really crank them up is rare...but whenever that opportunity presents itself, there's nothing finer! Lew

Re: Fave amps

Well I use a Hiwatt DR201, A Selmer T & B 50 watts top.
Fender Bassman 100 watt, used to have a Park 75 but I gave it to a friend of mine, he promised to get me another when the time is right.
Also I use a Conquest R65 combo they say it is Class A 50 watts, but two EL-34's "only" deliver about 30 watts in Class A...awesome cleans and great with od-boxes.
Then I have an AC-15 clonetop with a AC-30 preamp.
Monster tone in a small amp.
I am looking for a Plexi Marshall both 50 and 100 watts tops.

Re: Fave amps

My current rig doesn't actually use an "amp" in the traditional sense. I'm running through processors into a power amp, but it IS a Marshall PA. For some of the "armpit of the state" places that we play in, I don't always need that much power, so I take along a Line 6 Spyder 112, 50 watts, which is a nice little combo amp and fills the bar up quite adequately. I also used to use (and still own the amp) a late 70's blackface Fender 75 with a Roland Space Echo in the effects loop and way too many effects to name in front. Lots of nice natural compression.

Re: Fave amps

Mesa Rectifier Recording Preamp
Mesa Stereo 2:100 Power Amp
+ Secret Weapon :winks:
Mesa Recto 4x12 (Celestion Vintage 30's)

Peavey TKO 75 1x15 combo

Mesa - The clean channel does both a good clean, and has some sweet 70's mojo when you use it to overdrive the power tubes. The dirt channel can go from a nice dirty blues to sludge metal to thrash metal to nu-metal and all the way back again. You can go from tight tracking RAW gain mode, to a looser high gain feedback ridden VINTAGE gain, and a tight scooped MODERN gain. All at the flip of a switch.

Peavey - While not Fender clean, the Peavey does a great clean none the less. It never distorts or compresses. I use it for a background fill with the other amp. Because of it's high headroom it takes effects really well. I'd like to replace it with a Fender some day.

Secret Weapon - A pair of THD Hotplates. With these, I can have my cake, and eat it too (meaning I can own a loud ass high gain amp, and actually quiet it down enough to use it). Without these, I would be hard pressed to make much use out of my power amp and would have to rely on my preamp for all my distortion.

So instead of going bzz bzz bzzzzz bzzz

I can go CHUG CHUG CHUGGA CHUGG

Re: Fave amps

I have some great stuff right now

a 72 Carlsbro TR60 very close to plexi tone with a bit more cream.
71 Traynor Bassmaster- plexi specs
63 Gibson Mercury and matching 2/12 cab
96 Marshall Plexi RI 1987X set to vinateg specs.

I am done with the new stuff, searching and finding these old heads oozing with mojo just is just so much more fun.

Re: Fave amps

I'm currently playing a Marshall 2555 which has to be one of the best if not the best amp they've made since the Plexi Superlead.

My favorite new amps are definitely Soldano. I've played almost every model of amp they're produced and my favorites are the Decatone, SLO, and Lucky 13 in that order. Their X88R rackmount preamp is also killer. I don't know if you're looking for that kind of grind, but they'll do killer blues tones as well as one of the best clean channels I've ever heard in a high gain amp.
