Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

My favorite is a Gibson Advanced Jumbo followed by a Martin D-28. IMO, Gibsons sound better with a pick/strumming while Martins sound better for fingerpicking...again just my opinion. I use to play Taylors because I loved the action/necks but they tend to sound too bright.

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

I'm in love with my D-18. Bought it new last July..can't put it down. Superb looks and tone.
It brings a whole new set of skills into the equation. Bludave said it best- " It fights back a little" lol.

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

I voted other. My favorite brand, period, is Collings. The D2HG just sounds alive every time I play one. Even fresh out of the box, I can't imagine what it would sound like after 10-15 years of playing.

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

Taylors. I sell a lot of acoustics at GC and they are very consistent with their quality in sound, construction, esthetics, and playability. I recently picked up a Taylor 320, basically just an all mahogany dreadnought, and I'm crazy about it.

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

I think Yamaha's higher level acoustics are great for the money. When I bought mine I had a budget of around $2500. I tested many different brands including Martin, Taylor and the likes.... I ended up with a Yamaha LLX6 for $1000.
It just felt better or equal to the more expensive brands in terms of playability, so I thought why not...

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

I voted Gibson - especially for some of the older ones (like J45's) but I should have voted "other" because I think there are some smaller custom makers that make products that are far superior to any big factory made guitars (even if they have a lot of handwork like - presumably - Gibson's Montana facility). Goodall is one of my favorites. Perhaps my favorite - for personal reasons - is a small one man operation in the Vancouver, B.C. area called John David Scott. The guy's name is David Amirault, and he got his experience working for Jean Larrivee. Mine is a simple mahogany and spruce OM model, and it is a perfectly balanced combination of beautiful tone, clear note to note definition, and exceptional volume for a smaller bodied guitar. Here are a couple of pics of it:

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

Acoustics are just like electrics in that they vary so much from piece to piece. I've been impressed by the construction by most of the name brand manufacturers, but tonally my favorites are Martin and Gibson with a slight nod towards Martin (however, I do love the southern jumbo and J-45 Gibsons). I only own one acoustic and that's a Martin 000-15M, 'nuff said there.

Re: Favorite Brand - Acoustic

I think Yamaha makes great acoustics for a low price.
I agree. My cheap Yamaha sounds good, stays in tune and takes a beating like a champ. I like it better than my boss's Gibson. Might not be as hight quality, but for the price it beat out every other acoustic I played in the same price range.
