Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

it depends on wich guitar I'm using, my gibson les paul and mij epiphone les paul both have alnico II pro pickups

my bc rich mockingbird with floyd rose hase a JB trembucker

and my home build guitar with floyd rose wil have the JB trem too

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

In my Strat with its Kahler trem, a Breed is perfect. The splitting option is really cool: the coil closest to neck gives a nice fat Stratty growl, the coil closest to bridge a very bright, almost harsh, but still full bodied sound. Used as a humbucker in a RAT2 it really shines. I use it with a 250k volume pot and a TBX; mostly I have the TBX on 5 when split, but pull it up to 6-7 when used as a humbucker.

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

I'd have to say the L500L and L500XL by Bill Lawrence :D

But I'm a little curious on the Holdsworth model aswell :)

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

Might as well chime in on this epic thread...

Two favorites, depending on what I'm trying to play: APH-1 and Duncan Distortion!

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

I would say the Custom Custom, Pearly gates or 59. Depends on the guitar and the tone I am going for at the time.

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

The Full Shred maintains clarity and definition thru lots of distortion like nothing else I have tried. Has a sort of think tone with presence. With lots of gain, it sounds like it has more sustain vs. distortion because of the clarity.

The Pearly Gates is my favorite vintage type. :laugh2:

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

hmmmm I voted for the Custom 5 because I like it's versatility and smooth open tone. My limited experience with the JB lead me to believe it compresses too much at high volumes and higher gain. Amazingly I feel that the Dimarzio Super Distortion and Air Zone give a more open, bassier high gain sound, esp in comparison to the JB.

I do like the Pearly Gates a lot, and I love the Alnico 2 Pro, but they don't have that chunk. I am one of the many that wishes to keep the sparkle of the Custom 5 but wants mids and sweetness of an Alnico 2 magnet.

Anyone think the Custom Custom is too buttery, not enough bite for hard rock?

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF. It covers any and all of the vintage sounds with authority.

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

Martian - How do you think the VHot PAf compares to some of the other pickups by Duncan or dimarzio? any specific ideas here?

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

I would love to see a Custom, 59, APH1 with an ALnico 8 in the 10k range or a Custom CUSTOM in the 12k range
I think that would open it up

I could go on for days comparing and contrasting both manufacturers' line. If you give me specific points of reference, like a 59 or a PAF, I could better advise you.

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

i picked the duncan distortion. Its one of the best bridge pups. I would say i love the air zone in my strat. i also like the evolution.

Re: Favorite Bridge Pickup?

right now it is a toss up between the air zone and V hot paf
they are both fabulous and close to one another in pafness
the air zone is just a fatter version which is good for a strat type guitar
I play all ibanez axes and the air zone really gets me that gibson type tone from a ibanez, real full and warm and no ice pick syndrome when nailing the real high notes.
the duncans stuff is real good but for me it is too harsh in my guitars
the dimarzio's seem to really gel with the ibanez stuff for whatever reason?
i tried the JB and the CC,the custom and the 59 and all of them where odd sounding in the ibanez stuff and had a spikey high end?
