favorite compressor

Re: favorite compressor

I settled on an A.M.T Guitar Krusher. I like it a lot better than the Boss offerings. I've had a few others through the years, but I've kept this one for almost 3 years now. It's a shame they don't make them anymore.

Re: favorite compressor

I built mine- a BYOC Compressor...easily the best I have tried. I also like a Monte Alums-modded Boss CS3.

Re: favorite compressor

Thanks for the replies. Do you guys run them before or after your OD/fuzz pedals?

Re: favorite compressor

Depends on what type of compression you want need. For a super country squish (ala Brad Paisley), I liked my Visual Sound Route 66. The MXR DynaComp and Keeley units are also well-regarded for that maximum compression. But for general compression I dig the one on my TC Nova System.

Re: favorite compressor

Check out the CMATMODS Signa Comp. I have the 4 knob version that replaced a Keeley 4 knob. I thought theKeeley was OTT whereas the Signa is more subtle and it can be left on to add some sparkle and presence without changing your sound.... love it.

Re: favorite compressor

I've been using a Boss CS-3 and while I like the general effect, it does squash my notes and also does something artificial sounding to pick attack. What do ya'll think is the most transparent sounding comp without getting into the high $ stuff? Has anyone tried out the Doubleback SD unit?

Re: favorite compressor

I use an el-cheapo DOD Milk Box compressor....my gain crunch and cleans never sounded better...it's on all the time, love it.

Re: favorite compressor

I've got a couple. I have a DOD that runs front of system on the pedalboard and a DBX 163X that runs front of system on my rack.

Re: favorite compressor

I have been using the T-Rex Comp Nova. It works great when I use a guitar with piezos (mandatory imo). Now I'm using it with my bass.
It just sound great.

Re: favorite compressor

Currently enjoying the tc electronics Spectracomp feature in the Staccato '51 bass amp head. (Wondering whether the same technology is available in their pedal range?)

Prefer the MXR Dyna Comp that I bought from Lu B over any Boss standalone pedal that I have ever tried but prefer the built-in compressor/limiter feature of the Boss ME-50B over the MXR. (Sorry, Lu.)

There is a compressor built into the Marshall DBS 7400 head but it leaves much to be desired.

The one that I use most frequently is the trusty ol' dbx 266XL Compressor/Gate rack unit. I like the audio artifacts it produces.

Re: favorite compressor

After trying the Boss CS3 and MXR super comp, I've finally settled on the Keeley comp.

I do still want to try the Duncan Double Back comp. The description sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

Re: favorite compressor

I don't use compression a huge amount . . . mostly for smoothing out funk playing, and the occasional smooth Santanaish solo. The Marshall ED-1's works well for me . . . they can be picked up for pretty cheap and work well. Seems to sound best after the wah and before gain pedals.

Re: favorite compressor

Basic CS-3 (but I do gas for a Monte-Allums). I put it before, but never use it in conjunction with dirt.
