I've been through my fair share of Gibsons. About a month ago, I grabbed my dream one - an ES-335 in tobacco sunburst. I've had a love/hate thing for Gibsons for years and I'm not a fan of their (lack of) quality control. With that said, I'm a smart enough man that when I find one that sounds the part and looks the part, to jump on it and that's what I've done. I probably overpaid considering it was a non Historic model, but if I've learned anything it's that it all comes down to how the wood resonates in that specific guitar and this one's a good one.
I love the ES-335. It's classy, fits my larger frame really well and its sound just can't be replicated by other guitars. There's a midrange chirp that's really cool and jazz voicings sound amazing with it - so warm and full and clear. Les Pauls were a bit too compressed for my taste, I'm not a fan of the SG's upper mid focus, the balance with Firebird's are not my thing and the lower bout always got in my way on Explorers, so all in all I've just chalked it up to learning that "my Gibson" is an ES-335. YMMV.
