Re: Favorite Gibson Model

how can this be a poll about gibson guitars without the option for the most recognized gibson guitars?

I love SGs and 335s.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

normally, I'd say Les paul, but lately I've been diggin' the SGTV Jake E Lee sports
in the 'Shot In The Dark' video :)

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

The Gibsons that I have owned have been solid body models, but of the models you've shown, I have played the Byrdland and Barney. Dig the Barney!

Had a chance to pick up a beater Barney that a mate had rebuilt rather nicely for cheap some years back. I would say that I regret passing, but considering all the moving I've done since then, it may not have survived anyway.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

When I graduated college my dream was to get a Byrdland ala Ted but they were just unwieldy guitars in the context that I'd use them so I bought a Gibson Country Gent. I still regret not getting the Byrdland, it was down to a '67 tobacco burst and a '66 in black and I just chickened out.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

1st: SG (Any type really. Faded - awesome; standard - ok or great, depends; custom - sexy)
2nd: Les Paul Wine Red Custom
3rd: Explorer

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

My favorie Gibson is a 335. Nuff said!

For a long time I wanted Birdland. I just thought it was the coolest guitar ever! Then I had a chance to play one & I was disappointed with the scale length & I just couldn't play it. Years later I wound up getting what I feel is my #1 humbucker my 335. A few years ago I also got a 359! Cool guitar but not quite as good as my335.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

Of the options listed, I like the Johnny A. Of gibson models in general, I love the Explorer and LP..

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

My favorite Gibson is an ES-335. If I have to go with a full hollow, I'd love to have a ES-175D from '53-'56 with P-90s.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

I just voted for my favorite of those listed.

My favorite full-hollow is a 330/Casino, with the gold 295 not far behind.

My favorite semi-hollow is an Epi Sheraton (with the New York pickups, like John Lee Hooker played), or a 345/355.

My favorite solid body is a full-guard SG Standard from the pre-Norlin years (which has a Vibrola, of course). That's in a near tie with the first incarnation of the Les Paul Custom, with the soap bar pickups.

My favorite acoustic is an L-50 archtop.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

I've been through my fair share of Gibsons. About a month ago, I grabbed my dream one - an ES-335 in tobacco sunburst. I've had a love/hate thing for Gibsons for years and I'm not a fan of their (lack of) quality control. With that said, I'm a smart enough man that when I find one that sounds the part and looks the part, to jump on it and that's what I've done. I probably overpaid considering it was a non Historic model, but if I've learned anything it's that it all comes down to how the wood resonates in that specific guitar and this one's a good one.

I love the ES-335. It's classy, fits my larger frame really well and its sound just can't be replicated by other guitars. There's a midrange chirp that's really cool and jazz voicings sound amazing with it - so warm and full and clear. Les Pauls were a bit too compressed for my taste, I'm not a fan of the SG's upper mid focus, the balance with Firebird's are not my thing and the lower bout always got in my way on Explorers, so all in all I've just chalked it up to learning that "my Gibson" is an ES-335. YMMV.

I love the straightforward simplicity and tastful elegence of the Barney Kessel and Byrdland (esp since it's got P-90s).

Which version did you end up with and how much do you have in it if you don't mind my asking? I picked up a 2007 Fatneck 335 (vintage burst; probably the same color as yours) this spring for $2150. I'd seen them going as high as $2700-2800, so it seemed like a good deal.

Re: Favorite Gibson Model

Man that Barney Kessel model is not my type but it's gorgeous. My fav of the bunch. What an amazing guitar player BTW, RIP.

As for Gibsons and me, a Les Paul double cut with humbuckers would be my way to go.
