You could've used that "your mom" choice for something else dude :). I like balance and sustain, in fact I think those are the key elements to a versatile guitar. I like mahogany, but I like Korina more, it's more musical like Blueline said, it might be hard to believe in fact I sometimes have trouble believing it. Mahogany is pretty cool, sustains well, but is too warm (too much, bass and mids) to really be versatile. I think solid maple caps help it balance out, but for optimal balance get a hard maple neck as well. You'll get the best of both worlds; balance and sustain. Because I think most pick ups tend to sound bassy, and Ebony fingerboard is prefered, it's sharp crunchy and feels amazing!

I voted Mahogany w/ maple neck, because it comes closest to my ideal :)
Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but is korina then almost like mahogany with a maple cap? Not as warm as mahogany? How about a korina strat-style body with a maple neck and an ebony fretboard, what would this combo produce?

Re: favorite guitar wood?

I'm definitely a mahogany maple cap kinda guy, however it's always nice rolling over in the morning and using my morning wood.

Re: favorite guitar wood?

Fender-ish works for me.

Alder is great, but ash is prettier.
Basswood is fragile as hell, and doesn't sound that good either.

A maple neck is a must. Looks better than mahogany, and gives a nice tight tone.

Re: favorite guitar wood?

mahogany and maple cap for me....

i'd love to try a korina though...especially a bass

Re: favorite guitar wood?

Black limba (black korina). Similar to mahogany, but more open and a bit better treble response. Plus it looks damn cool, check out this Thorn.

Re: favorite guitar wood?

You know what? I couldn't decide on a favorite, so I picked your mom. Besides, I couldn't resist choosing your mom as my favorite.

Re: favorite guitar wood?

of the things on the poll: mahagony +maple cap
the real favorite: rosewood with pure ebony neckthrough and ebony board(i know some people might call me crazy)

Re: favorite guitar wood?

I picked your mom!!! She is amazing sounding when she is played correctly by an experienced player!!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Particle Boardis my favorite wood!!!!

Re: favorite guitar wood?

I like my single coil guitars (G&L Strats) to have mahogany bodies, and maple necks. If the fretboard is rosewood, then I like then even better!

Re: favorite guitar wood?

I voted All Mahogany but Korina is my favorite. Otherwise known as Blonde Mahogany, Limba, African Mahogany. Has a slighty brighter tone but similar to Mahogany while lighter in wieght.

Re: favorite guitar wood?

Excuse my asking, but why are Korina your favourite?

Re: favorite guitar wood?

I like most guitar woods.... too hard for me to pick a favourite... I love Mahogany and Maple necks.... I love Basswood bodies.. Alder Bodies, Maple Necks with Rosewood, maple necks with maple boards....... Popular, Limba, Koa, Maple bodies

I own guitars made out of all the above......

I made a home made strat body out of mahogany with a thin cap of flame oak! Sounds great!
