Phaser. It's that watery sound...just...awesome...

+1for tremelo (sp?). See "In Like The Rose" by BRMC for the latter.

Tremolo.

"In Like The Rose" rocks my socks off.

Re: Favorite modulation type

I love that slimy tremolo effect of old R'n'R songs. It's the modulation of my Boss ME-50 I use most

Re: Favorite modulation type

I voted chorus since that's what I use the most, my beloved Boss DC-2 Dimension C.

I recently removed my old flanger from the pedalboard to make room for a tremolo. I rarely used the flanger for that "Cradle Will Rock" swoosh sound. My flange sound was more of a real heavy chorus anyway, so the DC-2 is close enough.

Despite my "chorus" vote, I also love tremolo. I picked that up from listening to John Leventhal, mostly on Shawn Colvin's albums. Johnny Marr, too.

Univibe is way cool but don't own one, figuring it will soon be redundant. I have some Leslie guts stashed in the garage; a 2-speed foam-rotor assembly pulled from an old organ and bought cheap on eBay. I'm putting control switches for it on my latest pedalboard, and then will build a cabinet for it. Nothing does Leslie like a Leslie!

Re: Favorite modulation type

Chorus all the way! The phaser is fun, but doesnt suit ALL moods... The chorus can be tweaked to a point where it is hardly noticeable... It just adds dimension, but doesnt color my tone...

BTW, IMHO, saying that a chorus and a flanger are the same thing is like saying a Vox 847 and a Dunlp Crybaby are the same wah.... They arent!! If nothing else the voicing separates them.... Not really the same are they?

In light of that, I can make a chorus sound like a phaser, but I could never get my phaser tame and warm enough to sound like chorus as I use it....

Different strokes, different folks....

Re: Favorite modulation type

Choooooorus. But tremolo and vibrato are very cool too. I think chorus is a bit more useful though.

Re: Favorite modulation type

I voted for flange, but I wasn't thinking of Trem as a modulation effect, for some reason. I actually like Trem the most, in fact it's the only one I have permanently on my pedal board. I got rid of all my chorus pedals a long time ago, and I only occasionaly use a flange. Most of the time I think people use way to much chorus. The right amount can make cleans sound amazing, I love Andy Summers' tones, but live most people totally wash out their tone with too much chorus. I assume that it sounds better by the players amp, or they wouldn't make it sound that way. In a reaction to this phenomenon, I quit using chorus almost completely. I still occasionaly use it for recording, but live, if I want a fatter sound, I grab my fatter sounding guitar. Tremolo on the other hand can add that cool haunting quality, without muddying up your tone. I like flanger cause it can sound so cheesy when you want it to. I always think of seveties bad country songs when I hear phaser though. I think most of those guys were using the built in phasers in Musicman amps.

That's my 2 cents

flanger and chorus are exactly the same damn thing. There's no difference.

I'm not positive, but I don't think so. Flanging came about when a recording engineer accidently let his fingers rub the "flange" of a reel-to-reel tape. That caused the tape to skew across the heads, causing an in-and-out phase cancellation. Chorus, on the other hand takes a small pitch shift, and blends it back into the original signal.

Not quite the same thing . . . I think. ;)

Re: Favorite modulation type

i never really liked tremelo either. I found that it could give a cool effect but it wasn't a very versatile modulation.

Re: Favorite modulation type

I love a shimmery chorus. I also have a phaser in my effectchain, but I rarely use it. But what the hell is a flanger good for;)

The Univibe is the only real modulation device...

+1

Phaser and flanger are fun and have limited "special effects" uses but univibe I can use on almost anything at any time and it still sounds good, especially with overdriven single coils.

Re: Favorite modulation type

I love the Uni-Vibe sound. I got phased/flanged/chorused out during the 80s and dont use them anymore.
