Favorite Overdrive!

What is your favorite Overdrive pedal? Mine is the Airis Effects Protodrive V3!

This pedal does it all for me, it gets my amp as tight as I need if I am playing in Drop A or G, it adds a nice low end and very transparent yet nice amount of gain to my plexi to drive it to that Metallica tone.

Mine is rather boring, it was the final prototype made of the pedal.

This is what the regular version will look like:

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Been loving my Duncan TT Mayhem into my Carvin combo. Especially with the 31band Peavy eq in the loop.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

My favorite right now is the J Rockett Archer. It matches really well with my amp and guitars, and I hardly ever turn it off.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

I kind of hate myself for it, but the Ibanez TS Mini. I've gone my entire playing career hating tubescreamers, I thought they were mushy, that they lacked bass and high end detail. For a few years I've been alternating between a few Klones, a Blues Driver, a Walrus Audio Voyager and an Xotic Sl Drive, and I've loved all of them but when it comes time for the gig I always had trouble getting it to sit right in the mix.

Even worse, if I brought two overdrives to the gig I would get what I'd call 'A/B fatigue', where one of the pedals would sound WAY better than the other for no real reason and the second pedal would feel like it was missing something. I bough the TS mini on a whim after hearing Bob Lanzetti use one and it was just 'there'. It sat perfectly in the mix, rolling off the bass and treble stopped it from stepping on my bass player or keys player, and the mid boost helped it sit out in a mix.

It does exactly what I need it to do, even if that thing is super simple to achieve. I hate that I love it so much even above my boutique stuff.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

My answer will likely be different if asked in 6 months or a year but ... Keeley Oxblood. Not a clone but can do Klon-ish. More versatile.
Zen Drive (clone) is up there as well but I like it best into an amp just on the edge of breakup.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Right now, a tie between a Purple Plexi Clone and a Marshall Jackhammer (OD mode not Dist)

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

For me, it's the Boss SD-1. I had a Bad Monkey and it just didn't do it for me. Never got my hand on a Tube Screamer. The SD-1 does my bluesy stuff well and kicks the high gain a little further for leads.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Good question. If we're talking about OD pedals (as opposed to distortion/amp-emulation pedals) then I love my Bogner Harlow. But it's more of a compression pedal to me. My favorite OD pedal that I've ever had was probably my Fulltone OCD. I just liked the way it tightened things up, and made them sparkle and roar. I used it with the level set very high and the gain set low. I sold it when I got into amps that it wasn't really needed for. But this thread got me to thinking about it again and I just went to the TGP Pedal Emporium and made an offer on another one, because there are times when the bottom on my Friedman Dirty Shirley could use a bit of tightening (like when I'm playing more modern rock). Hopefully I'll dig the OCD into the Shirley as much as I dug my old one into my Bogner Shiva and Marshall 2203X.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

My absolute favorite is the old Boss OD-1 with the big 14-pin chip. Unfortunately, prices for a vintage one put them out of my reach these days. The closest I can get is by modding a SD-1 to OD-1 specs (the 8-chip version). On my board today I have an OCD v4. Absolutely fantastic overdrive. It does everything I need it to. Sometimes I use it as a standalone drive in to a clean-ish amp and sometimes I use it as a boost in to an already overdriven sound.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

timmy has been my go to overdrive for a long long time

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Although I have quite a few nice ODs I like, I've been playing Strat into Fender a lot, so my favs are the Fulldrive 2 for overdrive and Wampler Pinnacle for distortion.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

1. Bad monkey for tight crisp stuff

2. Green Rhino for saturated stuff.

3. OCD to break up the clean channel slightly

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest. It's the most flexible overdrive ever and looks the coolest, too.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Lately mine is this locally made creation, the King Klon by TL Pedals Canada.

1/2 Klone, 1/2 King of Tone clone. I apparently bought the very last one to be made and only about 10 to 15 of them were produced.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

BTW, I use the 'mixer out' of the Bad Monkey to go into the amp. Makes it darker, which I like.
