Favorite Overdrive!

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Timmy is a nice one. I have a surf green model. It's definitely near the top of my list of favourite OD's.

i have two. one older and one newer. i swapped the chip in the older one to a lm1458 which is smoother and kills with brighter amps. the stock chip is better with smoother/darker amps

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

The Klon KTR is my favorite. The Visual Sound Route 808 (an improved Tubescreamer) is my next favorite.

But I usually use the "Overdrive" (Fender Overdrive) or "Green Box" (Tubescreamer) on my Mustang III modeling amp.

They're part of the amp and sound fabulous. As does the amp.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

This old Marshall Blues Breaker has been my favorite overdrive for over 20 years now.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Lately, my favourite is a Dano Daddy O. I bought it a couple of years ago, but never really liked it--it was fizzy and raspy with my Champ 12.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a Sidekick 30 Reverb and the Daddy O sounds terrific with that. I guess it likes solid-state better than tubes?

My all-time favourite OD pedal is the Ibanez STL Super Tube, but right now, the Daddy O's killing it with that sweet three-band EQ...

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

At the moment my Ibanez TS-9 tubescreamer. Use it as a clean boost on top of my red channel on my 6505+ and it sounds so good.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

To boost a high-gain amp, my TS808 is my favorite.

In front of a clean amp, I like the Boss BD-2.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

I really like my Fulldrive 2 MOSFET: Powerful, subtle, tweakable.

(That said, I haven't gotten a taste yet, for the non-MOSFET mode... Glad I didn't get an older Fulldrive 2 , even though most people prefer it.)

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

I went through a period where I used OD pedals a lot then just realized that they killed off too much in the way of dynamics and feel so then I went through a long period of not using drive pedals at all...until a few months ago!!!

I tried a BMF Effects Godfather II and was blown away!!! I spent several hours trying different guitars and amps as well as tweaking the controls and that was just on the "B" side!!! The "A" side is amazing as well and they are both voiced a bit differently giving me 2 flavors are drive plus they stack better than anything I've ever tried before.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

Mesa Grid Slammer

For a long time I had trouble finding an overdrive that felt right when boosting a Mesa. This pedal folds right into the amp's sound.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

The 3 overdrive pedals on my board right now are my current favourite OD's. It's the TL Pedals Honker, King Klon and Visual Sound Open Road.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

the Digitech Hardwire Valve Distortion is pretty underrated. The crunch mode boosts the mids, is very transparent, and on higher gain levels nails vintage distortion tones. The saturated channel has more gain, and gets more modern tones. Picked it up for $50 on ebay. There were a few on reverb a bit ago but the price almost doubled for all of them. Check one out if you can.IMG_0687.jpg

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

For a set it and forget it OD I'd go with the OD9 as a boost.
For a lead boost I like the tried and true od808 and the od9+.
With my EMG-loaded guitars I use the VFE focus for a bit extra jolt without adding extra low-end "softening"/compression.

My favorite for really digging-out my perfect tone (aka tweaking) is this.
The mid-hump is always on up front, but you can voice it's boost with the mid knob.
The tone knob is later in the circuit and is a boost/cut with an adjustable corner.(inside the pedal).
Also has switchable clipping options inside.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

That's a good question...

I've currently got about a dozen different O.D.'s!!! I guess if I could only have one from now until forever it would be a plain old TS-9? I prefer true bypass 808's for singles usually, but I can get something "close enough for Funk" out of the TS-9...

It does exactly what I need it to no matter what amp or guitar I'm using it with & it does it quite well!!!
