Favorite Phasers

Re: Favorite Phasers

Speaking of the Wurlitzer, I wondered for a long time how EVH got that "guitar" sound on the main riff of "And the Cradle Will Rock", I found out later it was a Wurlitzer electric piano through a Marshall with a flanger or something on it. I never would have figured that!

Only yesterday evening, I was fooling about with a Moon Phaser and a BOSS Slicer in loop mode. These then ran through an overdriven valve amplifier. The resultant sound is difficult to categorise. It has hints of guitar, electro-mechanical piano, organ and distorted Chapman Stick. It kinda fulfils the role of several instruments simultaneously.

Re: Favorite Phasers

I have used phasers for guitar only. DOD 201 Phasor was my favorite for a long time, but I eventually sold it due to slight mid scoop when engaged. DOD 401B Phasor had even more of a mid scoop along with a noticeable volume drop. Ross phaser (Taiwan) wave form was not lopsided enough for my taste, a little too polite. MXR script Phase 45 reissue was bland, and the effect was too subtle. Nady PS-019 Phase Shifter was pretty cool, but I preferred the DOD 201 Phasor. MXR custom shop CSP-026 was too vanilla and too subtle. I adjusted the internal trim pot but got no improvement. It also was noisy.

The winner? Bog standard MXR Phase 90 reissue without mods. Love the shape of the waveform...just lopsided enough. Full across frequencies with what I hear as only a slight boost in mids without the obnoxious distortion that so many people complain about. Slight volume boost which I prefer to a volume drop.

Re: Favorite Phasers

I use the Joyo tubescreamer and love it.

I decided to order the Joyo Phaser, it's only $35.

I'm really curious about the Earthquaker phaser

You obviously prefer the phasers with the feedback circuit. I have a Custom Shop Phase 45 reissue, and it doesn't sound mild at all to me, especially with distortion. It almost sounds like a Univibe when used with a distorted guitar sound. The swishy Phase 90 with the feedback circuit is OK with a clean guitar sound, but IMO it's just too much when distortion is used. So, it depends on what you want from a phaser. I haven't tried the RI Custom Shop handwired script Phase 90, but my Whirlwind Orange Box sounds perfect for that sound, these days I'm using the Phase 45 even more than the Phase 90. I had the regular Dunlop MXR Phase 90 for years, but I always wanted that early script sound without the (IMO) overbearing swishiness (that is the feedback). To each his own!.
