Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

My 94' Ibanez S540 LTD is my old Warhorse & a total shred machine :D

....it tends to make my fingers disappear when things get hot in the bedroom-shred dept. :p

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

Coming from someone that had shoulder reconstruction, Ibanez Prestige RG's kick ass. I'm far from a shredder, but their lightness, tone and playability are incredible.

I'd like to give 2nd place to Handmade BC Rich's from '76 to '84-ish. The gaudy import stuff was always garbage, and I'd never spend money on any BC Rich without the 'R' logo on the headstock. I've only played a few; owned an early 80's BC Rico Mockingbird, one of the first imports, previous owner Kahlerized it :(

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

Wow what a bunch of ****ing retards. 3 votes for wayne charvel? I have huge respect for that man he is a legend.

Im guessing its cuz so few of us have played them.
I dont know if I ever voted. I dont know that I can. Im not much of a shredder. If I was, I have several extremely capable axes. An Ibanez RG570 which is kinda an original shred tool. A coupla Charvels, (also classic shred tools), BC Rich Gunslinger, and a guitar specifically designed for the genre, Washburn WM526.. So, how to choose?

Definitely a legend, and I definitely have a lot of respect for him, but I've personally played all of two guitars that were anything like what Charvel represented when Wayne owned the company. Great guitars, but not as good a fit for me as some of the others.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

I went with Ibanez though I actually have a Charvel/Jackson. The UV777 has been my dream for some long while!

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

Honestly, I can't choose just one. There are attributes on just about every brand mentioned above that I love and some I absolutely despise.

For me the Ultimate Shred Guitar would have to be built to my specs. For instance I would choose the ESP Horizon III Body Shape and make it a little bit oversized (I'm about 6'5 and some guitars look like a ukulele on me), then take Jacksons Compound Radius Fingerboard & Custom Shop Tung Oil Finished Neck, Ibanez Wizard Neck Profile Shape but make that Sh!t a half inch fatter!! 1 3/4 inch Width Neck at the Nut, Tone Pros String Thru Hardtail Bridge, Carvin's Medium Jumbo SS frets & 5 piece Maple & Koa Neck, Sperzel Locking Tuners, Graphtech Nut. And that would be about as close to perfect for my tastes.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

I'm afraid every superstrat is going to look like an uke on a big guy like you. They are small bodied guitars usually. If I were in your shoes, I'd look more into explorers, stars, ironbirds, warlocks, big V's like the double rhoads, oversized classics like the Stephen Carpenter ESP or the Buckethead Les Paul Baritone and last but not least: basses.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

All the modern Shredders play Ibanez.

From my experience, nothing plays better than an Anderson. He has pure magic in his necks.

Here's the thing, I shouldn't have to settle for something else completely. I agree that most Superstrat's are Small Bodied I just wish some Brands gave more Options for the 6 Foot Plus Guit Fiddler ( All they'd have to do is add a couple inches to the circumference of the body like they did with Buckethead's Les Paul, keep the same shape but just add a little bit more. Hell, Gibson cut down the size of the Explorer body and released the Explorer Pro for guys who don't like the size of the original. But don't get me wrong I LOVE Explorer's & V's, but aside from the BC Rich Mockingbird and Assassin, everything else in there line-up IMO is beyond Fugly. I know there are options out there but is it too hard to ask for a SuperStrat that doesn't look like a toy on me!??

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

I voted Ibanez, because I consistently can pick up an Ibanez in any price range, and if it doesn't already feel like money, its potential is just a short tune-up away. Every brand has this, but I find it much more often in Ibanez. I own a high end ESP, Charvel, and have played plenty of high end guitars in the last 15 years - something to me just feels right about Ibanez 90% of the time. Runner up so far is MusicMan - even though mine is a Sterling, the quality of the new JP 7 strings is out of this world.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

Yes, apparently. I'm afraid only a custom made guitar could make you happy.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

I voted ESP, because it's the only brand on the list I've really had experience with. The neck of my old Eclipse II was so east to play it was almost scary.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

Carvin here. Those are beasts, every one of them. Underpriced and overengineered.
Apparently you're no shredder unless you have a Strandberg or Mayones anymore, I guess. blah. Gimmee my weirdo Godins and I'll be fine.

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

I currently have a total addiction for Ernie ball music man guitars.

My Petrucci has a flat fretboard like an Ibanez but feels so much more meaty and raw.

It's an awesome shed machine.

Can't wait for my Luke to arrive :-)

Re: Favorite "Shred" guitar brand?

I dunno, do you mean 'shred' as in any kind of technical, rock inclined playing regardless of era or do you mean like Shrapnel style mid-late 80s 'shred'?

If it's the first, Ibanez. If it's the second, it's a toss up between Jackson and Ibanez.
