Favorite SS Amp?

What is your favorite SS Amp and why?

Mine is a Peavy Envoy 110 because the gain is very responsive to your volume knob.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Considering the ones I've played:

Vox Pathfinder 15R

I've also played a KUSTOM once that seemed very interesting.

Also, I had a Marshall MG-30 before the Vox and I didn't like it. Too sterile and artificial on the clean channel and too high gain on the overdrive channel.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I really liked the Randall RG200 G2 2x12 combo I had. Cleans were Meg but the "vintage" gain 1 cranked was good high gain and gain2 all of the way down had a really good crunch tone. Plus it was plenty loud enough to gig with

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Lot's of good ones. But….

My old Peavey Studio Pro 112

It was one of the first gen Transtubes. I would get another one of those in a heartbeat.
- 65 watts of juice so it could easily gig out and and about, but not too big
- Great clean channel with headroom and a bright switch
- Great metal tones, especially with a gain/thrash that goosed the gain and scooped the mids. You could play any metal on that
- Amazing low level breakup blues tones! seriously tube like
- Solid as a rock

I could do fantastic blues, jazz, rock, and metal sounds on that amp. Someday i WILL get another one.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I love my Tech21 Trademark 60. Light and loud enough for gigs and an XLR our for direct to the PA tones.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Considering that the most evil sounding lead guitar solo/tone of all time was recorded using one, I'd have to go with the Vox Supreme of the '60's. 100W solid state piggyback amp with a 4x12 w/ horns.

What solo was that?

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I haven't played enough good ones to have a favorite, but I kinda wish I'd bought this older Randall SS head I tried a few years ago. It had a nice crunch and character, and it would give just enough to feel a bit organic. Nice cabinet thunk with a 4x12, too.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I like my Roland Cube 60. I have played out with it numerous times in the past, it's my main practice amp, and I take it as a back up to every gig. I'd gig with it again if I needed to. The clean channel is great, and it takes pedals very well. The Tweed and Blackpanel settings are pretty good as well, though I don't really use them much. The reverb is nice, but the rest of the effects are kinda meh, so I don't really use them.

I'd take one of the bigger Peavey Transtube amps as well. I have one of the smaller ones and don't hate it, and I've played the Envoy and Bandit fairly extensively and liked them as well. If I ever lost or broke my Cube, there's a good chance I'd grab a Bandit or Envoy to replace it with.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

The Beta Lead is a great amp forgot about having one for 20 years oops , feel free to beat me to death with a bat.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I love my Tech21 Trademark 60.

I am SO GAS'ing for one of those.

But, in the mean time, I love my Hughes & Kettner Edition Blue 60R. Sweet and clean. (Dump the internal reverb and use an external one in the effects loop.)

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

my peavey stereo chorus 212 from back in the late 80s / early 90s - was heavier than a mofo, but had killer tone ... i liked it better than the much more popular roland jc-120

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

My favorite was the last one I had , which I sold before I made the switch to Acoustic. It was a 1988 red knob, Fender Studio 85 which I took out the stock speaker and replaced it with a Eminence Texas Heat. I miss that one to this day.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Hands down: Randall RG100ES. I also used to have a Ross 80 watt combo with 1 12" that kicked hard.
