Favorite SS Amp?

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Electro-Harmonix 44Magnum. That's the one that I can lift without long lasting pain in the spine afterwards. I can't forget that this pocket amp gave the stage playing back to me, that's why it's my fav. I really missed playing live.

It sounds quite nice with preamps though.

For "SS Amp", the correct answer is

SS%20Amp.jpg

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

i had an ol' G1 RedLine Peavey Envoy wich i don't change for lesser than tubes, the thing is really warm, thick, gainy and thight, once cranked it screams metal, but the clean chanel keeps clean and the vintage dist is straight rock and blues, also the spring reverb is insane!

40W of metal into an amp shaped box

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Does an Axe-fx through a matrix power amp count? If not then I have a weakness for a old roland jazz chorus combo.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

im not a bid fan of solid state amps but I have found 2 ss that are pretty darn good. I have been playing an orange crush 60 at the guitar shop where I take lessons and it is pretty sweet. great clean channel and the over drive sounds good pushed and doesn't grain up when I turn the gain down just sounds like a very good classic rock tone. the other is the randall rg300. the randall has a very good clean channel and has gain for days if you play metal its great.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I have had the opportunity to regularly play through one of these. Serious solid state. 17233-1.jpg

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Oddly, the head itself is covered in black Tolex, but the cab is the fuzzy stuff. Except for someone having kicked holes in the two lower speakers some time long ago, the thing sounds fantastic. Especially with the treble knob pulled out. With it pushed in, the mids tear your head off. In a good way.

Notice the holes in the bottom two speakers. Randall Jaguars in case anyone is wondering. I believe they were versions of the Vintage 30 made by Celestion.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Considering the ones I've played:

Vox Pathfinder 15R

I've also played a KUSTOM once that seemed very interesting.

Also, I had a Marshall MG-30 before the Vox and I didn't like it. Too sterile and artificial on the clean channel and too high gain on the overdrive channel.

I second this The Vox 15R pathfinder. The guys on the Tele forum rave about it. It is a pity Vox has discontinued it . Takes pedals well. I don't expect every to love it though..

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

A Quilter may, in fact, change your life when it comes to playing a solid state amp. The sounds are spectacular.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I've been using a Vox Pathfinder 15 and a first generation Vox AD30VT…. and both of them are great little amps !

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I'm torn between saying my Acoustic G20 and my Roland Cube 30. The cube has slightly better ultra-high-gain imo, but has to be re-eq'd with every amp change, the Acoustic just works like a charm with all the settings, even the EQ being left the same between mid cut and gain/clean.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

the old trademark 10 was a fantastic sounding little amp

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

Got really tired of my Kustom Hybrid 65. Nothing wrong with it after several years, just time for a change. So, I started searching. Went to the store with the intention of getting a Vox 15 watt tube amp. Was trying the Vox and it just didn't do anything for me. The store owner suggested I try this amp. He turned the amp on and plugged the guitar in. Really liked what I heard. The amp has a nice clean channel. It brakes up when the gain is increased.
Takes pedals really well. It does have an effects loop. Shame on me, I've had it awhile and tried the loop out when I first bought it, but I don't use it right now. The on-board reverb is enough for right now.

The clean channel has bass and treble only. Decided to run a small Danelectro EQ into the front end. Really woke this amp up. Yes, I would get this amp again.

Re: Favorite SS Amp?

I've played a lot of good SS amps over the years.

I have a SUNN Solos II 212 combo and I like it a lot. The Beta Lead and Concert Lead were also good sounding. I used to have an Acoustic Control 150 with the 106 cabs with 610s. That was a monster amp, though a bit noisy. A lot of bands used those back in the '70s. And the old Kustom tuck-and roll amps--John Fogerty used one with CCR. My high school had a couple that I played on, and that pitch-shifting vibrato was fun to play on.

The GK Backline 100 was a nifty little amp back in the day. Almost bought one.

I like the Peavey Transtube Series. I bought a silver and black Bandit for my nephew--almost kept it for myself. I've had good luck with all of the old Peavey SS gear. The Stereo Chorus is another fav.

The Tech 21 amps sound pretty good. I'm always impressed when I play one.

Their gain channels suck, and they are not the most reliable amps ever made, but some of the Fender SS combos have really nice, "Fendery" clean tones. And some of the old orange stripe Randalls of the '70 also have very nice clean tones. I have one of these; it's a 115 120-watt combo made for bass, but it also sounds good with a guitar.

Had a band in high school and we played an outdoor festival. I had bought a used BF Fender Band Master head and cab earlier that year, but at the festival, we had a backline of VOX Super Beatles to play through. Man, I was SO EXCITED!!!

And they sounded AWFUL!!!!! Fingernails on a blackboard harsh, and really tinny sounding. Made me really appreciate that Band Master!
