Yes lawrence has been doing alot of overall electronic stuff for ions! He's older than dirt also! LOL....

I like the A2 magnet in my bridge positions...I Like sweeter, warmer, rounder, and some slight squish to my notes....Depends on the gear after that though..
LOL LOL. Yes he is. What's amazed me is how he keeps is prices in the reach of everyone. Everything is in the $40 - $60 range give or take a few bucks.

Me too, A2 in the bridge. In the neck, A5 so the bottom is tighter. It can get sloppy there real fast. That and it needs that extra brightness the A5 gives to keep things balanced.

Although, I'm really close to getting a Tone Zone and Air Norton for my frankenstrat. They're both A5's.

I Like the A4 magnet alot in my Love Rock's Neck spot....The A5 is just a bit too woofy and too powerful up there..The A4 tames that and allows me to balance alot better with the A2 59B/Custom I have in the bridge as far as volume levels...I Like the even numbers better also! LOL A2 and A4...:laugh2:

Re: Favourite PAFish Pickup

Bare Knuckle has some models in the PAF-range. Stormy Monday (low-output PAF), Mule (medium-output PAF), Riff Raff (bright and punchy PAF), Black Dog (overwound, relatively middy PAF), and VHII (raw, very open-sounding PAF). There are some higher output PAF-ish models, too: Crawler (hot but very vintage) and Abraxas (Mule on steroids). You can e-mail Tim, if you're interested. I love the Mule set in my Artist. :)

The woofyness I've found depends on the wind of the pickup. The 59n is really woofy, but the Jazzn and A2Pn are not. Don't know what the PGn is like since I've never played one.

Really?! The PGn is my fav Duncan neck pickup...I happen to love a PG set...like them a lot!

Re: Favourite PAFish Pickup

I guess my fav(s) would be the PG set and I also happen to LOVE my Antiquity set. If you can get a set used (since lots of guys replace them...) the Burstbucker 1 and 2 set is really pretty nice for stock pickups. They are a little murky (not quite muddy but getting close) and not as complex souding as say Antiquitys but if you could get a set cheep grab them and try them!

I Like the PGB,but the PGN wasn't eq'd right for my tastes...I felt the mids were just a bit too spiked for my tastes...The 59 has a smoother tone and smoother eq but it's a woofy pickup unless you do the A4 magnet swap...I don't care for the "sizzle" characteristics of the PG series really either...Alot of people love the PG,but I can live without it...:beerchug:

I like this A4 Jazz/59N hybrid I just got finished up in the neck and the A4 59N is cool....I'd probably like a stock Jazz N also but I've yet to try one? The Hybrid has more harmonics and better note articulation and these are 2 very strong points that has me sold on them!

Another pickup I'd like to try would be an Antiquity Neck, but it's too expensive right now and I don't like the aged covers...I'd have to put a new cover on it...

I'm done tweaking on this Love Rock for now and I've gotten about as close as I feel I'm wanting to with it....I Pulled the bridge hybrid out 2 weeks ago or so and went right back to it....The Hybrid in the neck is pretty cool also..

Probably a nice marriage between the Jazz N and the 59N but maybe also in line with Fralin's A4 N humbucker?

Re: Favourite PAFish Pickup

So you're running a set of Hybrids in the Tokai?

Re: Favourite PAFish Pickup

John, you should try a Jazz neck. I think you'd like it. It's very clear, very articulate. Not too heavy on the bass. Has a nice top end to it. Cleans up really well. With some dirt on it it'll do blues really well and sometimes, to me anyway, have a single-coilish characteristic to it. I love it and aside from the A2P, is probably the only neck pickup I'll use.

Until you've tryed a hybrid pickup,it's hard to go back to the standard wind pickups in my case(In this guitar)....There's extra harmonic content which seems to fill out the pickup more, plus the mis-matched coils gives great note articulation..It's like taking the best things of the 59 and the Jazz and mixing them together...From there you just select the correct magnet...

In this guitar I Like the Hybrids, but in my Gibson SG I have a Nickel covered Fred in the bridge and a stock 59N....It's obviously the differences in the guitars and my ears tell me where to go in each of the guitars I own....

It actually seems like there are quite a few guys here that don't care for the PG...

I'm surprised I didn't care for the PGN cause the PGB was great, but I'm not the norm..Most people like the PG set..:smack: :laugh2:

Tangential to the thread...(aren't all my posts? :laugh2: )

I'm not really too fam with the BB1/2...but the Pros def have that slight murkiness factor...which I actually prefer...they still bite and scream though...I guess due to mismatched wind..but they are not overly bright or twangy like the 59s. I also find the BB pros as complex as the 59s(never have played antiquities tho) but that may be due to the more complex mids of the Paula vs. the Hamer....The BB pros are more "hard rock" and the 59s are more classic rock/bluesy..more sweet and not terribly aggressive.

BB also def sound better WITHOUT covers. Noticeable difference...more open...a bit less murky.

That is all

Roger

Over..

I'm not crazy about the PG's period, myself.....and If I had to have one it would def be as a neck pickup....that high mid spike and sizzle drives me nuts in the bridge...in the neck I like the extra bite for a more stratty/hendrixy type sound (but does not do so well for the Gary Moore type neck tones)

Re: Favourite PAFish Pickup

Jeff...the BB Pro's and the BB1, 2, and 3's are pretty similar...all of them have slightly mismatched coils and vintage winds but the Pro's are wax potted and have Alnico 5 magnets while the 1, 2, and 3's are non potted (unless you took them out of a guitar...the ones that come stock in a Historic are potted) and they have alnico II magnets. Really, IMO the best pickups that Gibson has made in several years!

Either DImarzio vPAF's or Wolftone's: http://www.wolfetone.com/

I'm not too familiar with Wolftone but I can testify that the Dimarzio Virtual PAF and Virtual Hot Paf combo is killer. That combo can nail most of the VH tones being sort after (IMHO) and seem to work extremely well in my Wolfgang Special. In matter of fact, I'm going to replace the stock Wolfie pups in my Wolfgang standard to this combo also.
