It's not really an attenuator. A real attenuator goes between the speaker out and the speaker and is actually dissipating part of the power going to the speaker, hence why they are big, get hot, and aren't cheap. This is just a volume pot that you insert into the fx loop, so it is basically just another volume control, it's not allowing you to run the output tubes hard and get power tube distortion. So, it's not any harder/easier on the amp that just turning down the volume control, but it may make it easier to fine tune the volume.
:bigthumb: For a bit more $$$ and IMHO much better in terms of form (not function) check this out for Fender HRDlx and BDRI.

These devices are great for addressing the notoriously extremely sensitive volume pots on these Fender amps (I have one for my BDRI), but as stated, they're not attenuators in terms of allowing the power tubes to 'cook' and still reduce the volume.

That's cool, unless you use effects in the loop, it won't let you do that.

Correct....I don't use the loop for other purposes.

That's really neat idea.

Nice thing about separate box is you can add different levels, extra loop, and such to the footswitch(es) with the volume and practically get channel switcher ;)
