Feedback Problem with my New Twangbanger

Hi,

I just got my new twangbanger and put it in my strat but I'm getting horrible feedback/microphonics. It's brutal.

I've read a couple threads that suggest I need to heat some wax to fill the space between the bottom plate and the pickup. What I didn't understand was where the wax comes from. Do I need to add wax and melt it into the gaps or is there existing wax around the plate thast I just need to spread around?

How many other people are having this problem with their Twangbanger's? It seems strange that I would have to do this to a new pickup to keep it from squeeling, plus I don't want to screw it up.

Re: Feedback Problem with my New Twangbanger

You probably pushed the bassplate loose when you installed it. Sometimes the adjustment screws push a bassplate loose when they thread into it.

In any case, remove your pickguard, and remove the mounting screws for the pickup. Take a soldering gun and heat up the bassplate until the wax melts. Then press it on tight and hold it in place for a few seconds until the wax hardens again. That should do it.

If it doesn't, remove the bassplate and drip a few drops of wax from a candle on the side of the bassplate that will pressed tight to the bottem of thepickup.

Heat it up again with a soldering tool and press it on tight until the wax hardens.

Very important: make sure the screw holes in the bassplate are centered with the screw holes in the pickup...otherwise you might push it loose again when you thread the mounting screws into it.

Thanks Lew,

That sounds easy enough, I'll give it a shot.

My Twangbanger didn't even look like it had any wax on the plate...Just picking up the Twangbanger made the bottom plate slide on mine...I did like Lew recommends...I put a fair amount of shavings between the plate and the pickup's base, clamped it lightly while also placing the mounting screws in each holes for alignment...I then took my wife's hair dryer and heated up the plate just long enough to see clear watery looking wax oozing around the plate..Mine is perfect with no microphonics...I wrote about a warning last week regarding this problem....
