Fender 2 prong power cord...

I just picked up an old Bandmaster Reverb...it still has the old 2 prong power cord. I've never used one with an old amp; do I need to get it replaced? Any dangers associated with it?

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

Nice...I thought I might try it out tonight. I do want it looked at by an amp tech soon anyway. Guess I'll get the replacement done at the same time.

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

it's not like instant death if you play it

most likely

the best thing to do would be to get it checked out before you play it

but honestly i wouldn't wait. But i'm also 19 and kinda dumb

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

I had a old Vibrochamp with the 2 prong chord. I took it to one guy to get it changed out because it kept shocking my leg. He told me that there was no need to worry as long as you get it plugged in correctly. If you plug it in upside down there will be more noise he said.

I changed it anyway. What odd advice.

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

So, how do you tell which way is up? Both sides look the same to me, lol.

Maybe I'll give it a little test tonight...then it's off to a tech.

Plug in your guitar cable and touch your finger to it. Plug your amp power chord in one way and then the other way. The way with less noise is plugged in correctly.

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

If you can't get a tech to do it quick, bring it on up to me. I can fix that cord (and remove the death cap) in about 10 minutes.

BTW, "right side up" for the plug is determined thus: if your shock you lips on the microphone, it's upside down. Turn it over. Although, that amp probably has a polarity switch on the back that does the same thing as flipping the plug.

Okay, I gave it a shot.

Amp works well, but had to jiggle the reverb send to get the reverb going.

This amp really sounds great so far. Of course, I'd rather not die so...off to the tech this week. Thanks for the advice guys!

Every time I think about an amp shocking me I think of the scene from Almost Famous.

Ha. I think of my first "guitar amp" - a Hallicrafters shortwave radio my friend and I found in the dump. We added a 1/4" input jack, and bolted a 6" TV speaker (also from the dump) inside the cooling vents. Shocked the hell out of me every time I got near anything electrical.

It apparently was a Hallicrafters S-38C, and it looked like this:

Speaking of amp techs in Houston, Jeff Seal has one of these in the museum in the lobby of his shop.

Thanks man-let me see if I can get hooked up this weekend (I'm waiting on some new tubes this week). If not, I'd be glad to throw you a few bucks to get it going. Personally, I'm just concerned it hasn't had much loving care and might need re-capping, etc. It does make sound though, which is nice.:14:

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

Just PM me if you want to come up. Always glad to help save a forum bro's life. j/k, sort of.

The cap job is a maybe-needed/nice-to-have upgrade. The cord is a must-have.

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

Quite honestly, the danger to you is bad enough to warrant getting it replaced, the danger to any other gear you have in the chain is probably worse. If you can't get with Rich, give me a call and we'll see about getting ya' fixed up... :)

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

aside from the cord, is it a BF bandmaster or is it a SF Bandmaster reverb? Just wondering, i got a '68 Bandmaster Reverb and I LOVE IT!

Re: Fender 2 prong power cord...

i replaced the 2 prong power cord on my 1965 Deluxe amp myself.... i added the 3 prong plug and screwed the ground lug to the same bolt that attatches the tranny to the chassy..... a little later i shipped it in to a tech to double check it for me.....
