Re: Fender '59 Bassman LTD mods?
I'm with Lew on this one. I've yet to come across a tweed bassman that I like. My fave of the modern fenders was the bassbreaker, though the last time I tried one I had just finished playing an array of Victorias and I wouldn't consider it in the same class as those.
I was offered a great deal on a Victoria bassman clone but just couldn't gel with it. Having compared the fender custom shop tweed twin with the victoria clone I will say that Victoria make a superior amp, so maybe you could track down a victoria bassman to try. If that doesn't do it for you start looking at other amp models. Perhaps you'd like their tweed Super clone. Go secondhand for value.
I'd just sell it...
Seriously, I've owned a bunch of original tweed Bassmans from the 50's and also a Victoria...I always end up selling them.
I know some of my favorite players (like Buddy Guy) love 'em and swear by 'em but for me, they're both to trebley and to bassy.
I've done the speaker swapping thing too...tried a bunch of differant Webers and combinations of Webers...and I have a nice little stash of old 50's and 60's Jensens (P10R, P10Q and C10N) I've used too.
Tweed Bassmans just don't do it for me.
