guys what do you say Fender 59 bassman or Vox AC30cc cleston blue speakers, for playing grunge,i know Vox is more expensive but if we keep the price issue aside then what??????

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

When you say grunge, do you mean gainy like Soundgarden/Nirvana?
If so, the Bassman is straight up blues tone, and the AC-30 is bona fide roots rock tone. I'm very familiar with both amps, and neither say "grunge."
Between the two, the AC-30CC is closer to the sound you're looking for, but you might want to look at Marshall, Orange, Peavey.

The best thing to do is pinpoint the guitarist who has the tone you're looking for, and buy his exact amp. There's no point is saying you want to sound like Stone Gossard, then buy an amp that Buddy Guy or Mike Campbell would use.

Buddy Guy is playing through Marshall JCM 800's now..but your point is understood :)

for grunge man, look at cheaper versions of marshall models. Things like old school traynors or other similar amps. Some good deals to be found, and they'll all that gritty vibe and mojo you need for what you want to play.

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

If it's between those two amps only, I'd say go with the Fender, since (in my experience) they take to pedals better. In playing grunge through either of those amps, you'll want some kind of distortion pedal like a Boss DS-1. However, like Jonesy said, you should probably look into other amps as well. Why are you limiting yourself to those two?

I posted a sound clip a few weeks ago of a flat-out Bassman LTD and a Rat, and it was Stoner Rock heaven !!!

When i think AC30, i think Queen :smokin: , Radiohead, early Status Quo.

But for GUNGE (i love GRUNGE myself) i would go gor the Bassman, everytime !!!

I'll try and re-locate that awsome clip - can't promise any thing though !

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

OK, here goes !

What you will be hearring is :

Gibson SG -->RAT -->BASSMAN LTD (and that's it !)

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3920947&q=hi

This, to my ears sound MUCH closer to Stoner Rock/GRUNGE (Soungarden-style) than an AC30 with a RAT will ever sound !

Also go to StonerRock.com, and see how many folks overe there (in their 30's and over) is using the allmighty BASSMAN LTD, in their bands !

Hope this helps !

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

I dunno, a dimed out AC30 with the channels jumped and stomboxes in front can be a magnificent "rock" tone if it can be harnessed and controlled by the player. That's the rig I normally use, AC30 with a power break...OLD style, not those new made in China "custom classics" they're pushing today.

Killer tone 'fer sure, but it's one of those rigs that makes ALL kinds of noise when I stop playing and is tetering on the edge of falling apart the entire time...Kinda like listening to live Hendrix or Randy Rhoads...they stop playing and there's all kindz 'o insane stuff going on!

The Bassman might get you there too...Vibrolux Reverb...maybe an Orange???

You can't rule anything out if you're looking for "your sound" 'ya know?

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

Here's a Les Paul (JB bridge pup) into a Dallas Rangemaster clone, then into a dimed AC30.

Man, i know tone is a very personal thing, but i prefer the Bassman clip MUCH more than the AC30 one. Especially for darker/heavier (NOT metal) music, like GRUNGE (ermmm, and Stoner Rock).

My very first LP (records, not Gibbo's) that i bought was a Queen album in 1980, and has been a fan ever since, but i also think QUEEN every time i hear AC30 ! (...almost too refined sound)

A Bassman, on the otherhand, in my eyes, is just a mean mutha :smokin:

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

uh .. Gearjoneser knows his amps.
He's likely the first person I would ask if I was looking for an amp ...

Buddy Guy is playing through Marshall JCM 800's now..but your point is understood :)

I have cetainly seen Buddy playing through Marshalls, but Buddy is known for using Bassmans for years, including his Victoria version. :D

anyway, the Bassman, especially the LTD, is a better investment certainly

it's the first amp I'd get if I was gigging

add a Rat or your favorite OD and you're good to go

Re: Fender Bass Man Vs Vox Ac30cc

Grunge was never limited like some metal styles are... Nirvana had heavy riffs on single coil equipped guitars... there were grunge players who used Fenders and players who used Gibsons... players had their own tone and it was more about being part of a movement then a part of a style with gear "rules" (PRS into a Mesa for Nu-Metal... big Gibson jazz box into a Twin Reverb for vintage jazz...).

a good pedal (a fuzz should work really good here) and a good vintage voiced amp would do the trick... unless you have a specific tone you want to get I think that sounding "grungy" is strictly about the gear...

I only referenced that clip to demonstrate that you can get a heavy tone very easily with an AC30. It's certainly not the ideal for grunge rock. I find Fenders more versatile than Voxes, which is why I voted for the Bassman; this wasn't an attempt to prove the AC30 a better grunge box than the Bassman.

Good God, I didn't think I would ever agree with Gearjoneser, but this post says it straight and proper.

Breaking news :

My Queen-obsesed youmger brother just reminded me of something and i feel real bad for not thinking of that, as it impressed the SH!TE out of me !!!

Has anyone have a copy of the Page/Plant DVD, "No Quater" ?

About half way into the DVD, our two hero's go to the city square to perform a "western-style rock show".

Plant sang (obviously - i think), and Page (believe it or not) played with a Les Paul, into a VOX AC30 - with some drum backing tracks !!!

-- I HAVE NEVER HEARD A MORE BEAUTIFULL AC30 TONE IN MY LIFE --

OK, he had a huge midi-like foot controller infront of him, so i can not say it was just LP, straight to an uneffected vintage AC30, but still - the tone was (and stil is for me) the sweetest AC30 tone to reach my ears !!! :smokin:

Can anyone comment/expand on this senario/DVD ?

And it you guys do not have the DVD, you better get it ASAP !
