The best thing to do is pinpoint the guitarist who has the tone you're looking for, and buy his exact amp. There's no point is saying you want to sound like Stone Gossard, then buy an amp that Buddy Guy or Mike Campbell would use.
When you say grunge, do you mean gainy like Soundgarden/Nirvana?
If so, the Bassman is straight up blues tone, and the AC-30 is bona fide roots rock tone. I'm very familiar with both amps, and neither say "grunge."
Between the two, the AC-30CC is closer to the sound you're looking for, but you might want to look at Marshall, Orange, Peavey.

Buddy Guy is playing through Marshall JCM 800's now..but your point is understood![]()
Man, i know tone is a very personal thing, but i prefer the Bassman clip MUCH more than the AC30 one. Especially for darker/heavier (NOT metal) music, like GRUNGE (ermmm, and Stoner Rock).
My very first LP (records, not Gibbo's) that i bought was a Queen album in 1980, and has been a fan ever since, but i also think QUEEN every time i hear AC30 ! (...almost too refined sound)
A Bassman, on the otherhand, in my eyes, is just a mean mutha :smokin:

I only referenced that clip to demonstrate that you can get a heavy tone very easily with an AC30. It's certainly not the ideal for grunge rock. I find Fenders more versatile than Voxes, which is why I voted for the Bassman; this wasn't an attempt to prove the AC30 a better grunge box than the Bassman.
