Fender Blues Jr 80 proof

Re: Fender Blues Jr 80 proof

hey Joe (and all others, actually?) is there a substantial delta in quality within that age group of Pro Reverbs given the switchover from blackface to silverface in that era?
are you recommending the blackface ones in the 65-67 era or the FMIC silverfaces after '67? or are either a good bet? ... i am seeing guys advertising amps as '65' but the pic shows the blackface panel with FMIC (CBS) on it, not FEIC (pre CBS)
what do you think ?

thanks
bc

The 65 - 67 blackfaces are the ones that fetch the most money. Everything is perfect about them, although new speakers are always an improvement over the worn out originals.

I say 65 - 74 because that's when it had no master volume. Master volume Fender silverfaces sounded more sterile and lifeless. However, it's always recommended to do the silverface to blackface circuitry mods, which is simpler on pre - 75 models, as far as I know.

I'm not sure what kind of wood was used on every year of silverface, but I do believe the cabinets were slightly larger, which isn't a bad thing. I think they're a little taller and deeper.

I like that it's in between the size and wattage of a Deluxe and a Twin.

I love it and want it, BUT at $2,000 that makes it more expensive than my EVH 50 watt double stack.

Nice piece for the living room though

joe, i agree that the pro is a great amp. big bottles, two 12s, and all the bf reverby goodness

thanks, Joe
yeah, it might just come down to playing a few ... it just kills me that guys lie and say that a given amp is 65, but the printing on the faceplate (FMIC) doesnt match what should be there (FEIC) ... but i guess if it is clearly not a master volume model and it sounds good and the price is decent, its a reasonable choice ... id just hate to be ripped off/over pay, yunno?

Re: Fender Blues Jr 80 proof

price difference between a '65 and '67 is pretty small in my experience

Re: Fender Blues Jr 80 proof

I think it is a great opportunity for someone who is great at woodworking to make a business recycling old barrel wood by building replacement cabinets for your $300 Blues Jr, and charge $400 for it.
