Fender Blues Jr. question

A co-worker of mine has a Fender Blues Jr and says it's about 10+ years old. Said he'd sell it to me if I'm interested. I haven't checked it out yet but wanted to post on here and get some feedback on what would be a fair price and what, if any, upgrades (ie...newer tubes and/or speaker) would be necessary or advised for an amp that old.

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

I'd suggest doing a search for similar sold items on EBay.
Prices have gone up quite a bit on new ones, and I have no idea how that's affected used prices.

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

ebay is usually a good indicator of prices. as for upgrades, if its all stock then id retube it and put a better speaker in there.

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

agreed on price checks per ebay ... condition will be key ... play it first and see what you think ... as for upgrades, again, your ears have to be the judge ... tubes if they are old ... the so-called billm mods (google knows) are really good and open it up nicely ... a speaker if you have to would be your most expensive call and could also help ... but have an open mind that it could work for you as-is ...

good luck

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

my local Craigslist site has a 6 yr old Blues Jr. in good condition for $200. That's about what I'd be willing to pay for a decent one.

plan on retubing the amp (not too expensive) and replacing the speaker if you're trying to get 110% out of the amp. Check out Weber's Jensen/"American"-type 10" speakers. I'm not sure which preamp tubes work best with the Blues Jr. (someone who currently owns one can help out I'm sure) but the JJ and TAD El84 power tubes are good choices.

Very good advice here...don't be in too much of a hurry to change it until you get to know it.

yeah, a coupla hundred bucks in good shape sounds right
when mine needed it, i got the jj kit for max headroom - sounds better than stock
12" in the blues jr, not 10"

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

Thanks to all for the input. I love the Seymour Duncan forums! Everyone has been very nice and quite helpful. I just feel bad that I don't have anything to contribute and am only asking questions.

12" in the blues jr, not 10"

that was slip-up #1. #2 is that the Weber Jensen-voiced speakers are the "Vintage" series . . .

the 12F150 comes to mind as one of the better speakers for Fender amps. Eminence has some great choices as well for a little less $$

and I do agree with everyone else that you don't need to plan on changing anything right off the bat unless the power tubes are really old. take it one step at a time.

I have the JJ max headroom kit too, it really rocks. Along with that ive done a few of the billm mods and also put a weber blue dog in there. The amp is an absolute killer now, great little beast.

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

if you can find one for $200 bucks in good shape...BUY IT!!!

another +1 for a max headroom retube kit from Eurotubes!

Re: Fender Blues Jr. question

My is a Made in USA (old one). I'm not selling it for 2 bills. That's stupid cheap.
