Fender Custom Shop Strat

Hey guys. I went by GC today and they had this Custom Shop Strat for $2,200. It played and sounded great.

Can anyone tell me about the Fender Custom Shop stuff? They couldn't tell me much about it.

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

the custom shop makes great guitars, if you like the way it feels then there is no reason not to get it as far as quality. not cheap but sometimes good things arent.

the pups are probably all the same so adjusting heights is the only way to get balance. thats the way it was back in the classic days of leo fender guitars

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

The pups are OK. The neck pup is WAY louder than the bridge though and it's practically flush with the pick guard.

Hence the popularity of HSS :D I'm hoping my Seymour Duncan Custom Shop pickup fixes that problem in my strat without me having to go the HSS route.

Definitely would be interesting to see what Fender says about this Custom Shop axe. But, I do like American Standards and Deluxes.

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

I also played an American Standard. It was nice but I liked the feel of the Custom. The neck is beefier. I'll look into getting the specs.

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

I'd crank that bridge pickup up first and see where that take you. There's also plenty of high output singles out there (SSL5 or FS1 to name but a few).

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

american standards are fine instruments but the custom shop is a step above. id play whatever you get for a while before you swap anything out

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

Oh yeah, I'd definitely keep the pups in there for a while and see how it goes. I'll have to go back, adjust the pups a try it again.

One problem I have with GC is that most guitars on the walls have ancient strings on them.

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

for that kinda of money, if you are seriously considering buying it, ask them to put new strings on it.

Isn't that the truth...played a Martin HD28 well attempted to play one yesterday, strings were corrosive and rusted beyond notes ringing out...sad.

For sure. I smell free strings and free set up. The Custom one was alright. The Standard was brutal. The screws in the switch were loose too lol.

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

Here's some info I got.

2 piece Alder body. Neck and Middle are '69 Strat Custom Pick ups (middle is reverse wound). Bridge is a Texas Special. Color Ocean Turquoise.

My white Deluxe came with the '69 Set and I swapped them out for Fat 50s. :) I like Alder–a little surprised to see it used on a Custom Shop as all I've seen came with Ash (but it wouldn't be custom shop for nothing! ;) )

Re: Fender Custom Shop Strat

the custom shop uses alder frequently, nothing unusual there. the pups that are in there should be able to sound really nice (even though i dont love the texas specials) but they arent humcancelling and the ts in the bridge doesnt have the same single note weight that the custom stack+ has

The guitar sounded good. If I get it, I'll play it through the 800 for a while to see what's up. Thanks for the input, guys!
