Fender Deluxe Reverb...

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

I'd have a shop look at it first. I'd keep it as stock as possible, at least at first. However, if it comes to a speaker swap, I'd recommend consulting with the big 3 (Eminence, Celestion, Ted Weber) directly as to which of their speakers will sound the way you want, but still, I'd wait to have it inspected.

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

ok that may make sense I have not played the 65 DR past volume 3.

Oooo....you have a treat coming! Don't be shy...crank it up. That's what DR's do best, IMO.

I did a gig at the D*ckens Opera House in Longmont, Colorado a few months ago and everyone was so loud I turned my DR up to "10" and plugged my '54 Tele with the Joe Barden pickups into it.

One of the guitarists from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (the guy before Dave Navarro I think) was also onstage and later said my tone was like a "Velvet Razor". Nice compliment!

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

sorry for the quick hijack...

lew, how much blow does your amp have? mines pretty noisy. any ideas what i can do to quiet her down?

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

My 65 Non-Reverb Deluxe amp is pretty darn dull sounding.... it is great for using a neck PU on a strat thru it but very dry sounding... i've often thought about changing the speaker and pack up the old one and store for re-sale only...

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

the non reverb models have less gain. in one of gerald webers books he details what he would do to a blackface deluxe to "tone it up"

if its the original speaker then i would do just that. pack up the stock speaker and put it in a dry place and put a better sounding speaker in

Noisy like a hiss or subtle crackle? I read in one of Gerald Weber's books that the crackling and hiss in old Fender amps that have been well maintained but still have the original 40 or 50 year old resisitors are sometimes caused by oxygen in the old carbon comp resistors on the preamp and output tubes. Mine have been pretty much gone through and replaced. I believe it was Ken Fischer who originally pointed out that issue with old Fender amps. My DR's are pretty quiet, though one is slightly noisier than the other. And , you know, once a drummer starts pounding away who's gonna notice a little hiss from the guitar player? LOL! Lew

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

no crackle or popping. just when flipped off standby it has a lot of whoosh coming out of the speaker that doesnt go away when the volume is turned down.

i have no neg feedback right now, im thinking that might have something to do with it. do you know what value you are using off the top of your head? im planning on replacing the ground switch with a feedback on/off switch. im not gonna go with the stock 820, i was thinking about double that. thoughts?

I'd experiment. Start by doubling the value of the standard 820 ohm neg feedback resistor and try a 1.5K neg feedback resistor. When the resistance is increased, it resists the negative feedback and you'll get less neg feedback. I did find that I prefered a little neg feedback over none at all.

Call my brother Bruce...he'd know. 303-423-4103.

Just tried it (hope my neighbors don't throw a fit). Played at 5 and then 7 and then what the hell I cranked it to 10. Had to turn the reverb down a bit but yeah wow she opened up. My SG with 57 classics in the neck sang like a sweet bird. But man does my strat sound great in this thing. I used a ts9 and it sounded very very sweet, creamy, and thick.

I still did not have the treble at 10 but she sounded good at 8. Maybe I just need some getting used to and the amp isn't quite broken in yet.

Anyways thanks for the turn on.

I generally keep my reverb at less than 3...more like 2. Especially when playing loud. At that D*ckens Opera House gig I mentioned there was a Surf Band that went on before us. They had a bunch of old blackface Fender amps and actually played with the reverb on 10! I couldn't believe it...sounded awful. LOL! Lew

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

I guess a lot depends on what your trying to get out of it. I have a DRRI that's all stock and while I've never come to grips with using my Les Paul with it I LOVE how my Tele sounds thru it.

I'm using DiMarzio's with mine. Got a Tone Zone T in the bridge wired to a push/pull pot and a Virtual Vintage 2 Strat neck pickup. At times I'll slap on a tad of compression, a bit of delay and WOW!! All sounds great and I love it.

Re: Fender Deluxe Reverb...

like Keith Richard says..... "it took me a long time to figure out the seceret to a great Fender guitar is finding the right Fender amp to go with it".... or something to that effect....
