If you have played one before, and liked the feel of it, then I say definately, go for it. The Clapton Strat is an awesome Strat to have.

600US? I say go for it if you like it. Not everyone likes the LS (Clapton uses them for slide) but if you like 'em go for it! If not you can swap em out and probably still be cheaper than new!

Man i'd be all over that strat!!!!! I love the older Claptons with the Lace pickups..... mind you i'm biased as Pete Townshend has made them his main electric guitars for 16 years now.... Some with Floyd Roses, Kalhers, and lots with Fishman 2-post tranducer bridges..... I have my eye out for a red one....
I see Warmoth is selling a green 1999 Clapton they used to make neck measurements for their cnc machines for about $1100 USA

Man i'd be all over that strat!!!!! I love the older Claptons with the Lace pickups..... mind you i'm biased as Pete Townshend has made them his main electric guitars for 16 years now.... Some with Floyd Roses, Kalhers, and lots with Fishman 2-post tranducer bridges..... I have my eye out for a red one....

Typical eBay price would be 8 bills for it, so $600 is indeed a steal.
Early versions did indeed lack the "Blackie" name under the signature. Also keep in mind that any Clapton Strat in any color but black doesn't have it either so the chance exists that the neck might be off of another body.
Play it and see if the TBX is there and how you like it. Some folks hate the Lace Sensors, some like it.
I personally own one and thing the Sensors are VERY misunderstood pickups; they just don't act like regular pickups and you kind of have to get used to them.

I like the Fender Lace pickups... I have a Gold one in the middle of my Warmoth and plan to buy more! That nice bell tone is great! Only lately have i started to cut back and use stock single coils and stuff.. I want a set of Laces soone and i wish to order a Clapton Boost circuit too.. If i can afford it i want an old Clapton for sure..

I wish i had bought a used Clapton i saw a few years ago for $800 Canadian.... Kicking myself now!

Just rip out that battery powered crap and put some true single coils in it. Clapton's tone went straight down the toilet when he started using that active garbage. Compare his tone on "It's In The Way That You Use It" with anything on Journeyman, the album where he started using that stuff. Or, for a one song comparison, compare his tone with Robert Cray's in the song "Old Love" from Journeyman (he says "Robert" just before Cray's solo). Cray's non-active Strat sounds about 1000 times better than Clapton's. Just my opinion, of course.

Fender has been known to pull those sort of stunts. They did it with the Jeff Beck model a few years ago. They figured out that a slimmer neck would appeal to a larger audience and went and changed the specs on it without saying anything.
To me alot of the problems I have with newer fenders is the necks are too damned small for my hands. I picked up a MIM that had to have been some sort of mutant a few years ago because it's like someone chopped down a redwood, halfed it, and then slapped frets on it. It's monstrous and unwieldy and God help me if I could I'd have that size neck on every Strat I own!

Ya i remember when they changed the Beck necks.... I like the feel of thick necks.... But at the same time i use a few Jacksons with extremely paper thin necks! But i like the feel of thicker necks too a point... my 76 LP has too thick of a neck for me... my wrists hurt playing it after a few hours... I love my 87 Charvel neck.... Best Fender neck i have for feel is a 1988 American Standard.... It feels great and is quite large compaired to todays USA Standard models...

I didn't hear about the change to the Claptons but I DO remember the Fender Frontline catalong saying that the neck on the newer JB Strat was "Not as large or as deep as Jeff's previous choice."
As for the necks, you must have large hands... Some MIM strats i can get around on really well, some are so-so, some are like playing baseball bats. I have small hands to so this is a big issue for me. It's also a big reason why I luuuurve Music Mans.
If you're a fan of big necks though Warmoth offers that Boatneck (i think thats what its called) replacement neck.

How is it that the headstock decals on all the Claptons I've seen look "dodgy". Not dodgy as in non-authentic, buy dodgy as in amateur? Or is that one of the artist's specs? My strats have invisible decal edges. What gives?
