As for the necks, you must have large hands... Some MIM strats i can get around on really well, some are so-so, some are like playing baseball bats. I have small hands to so this is a big issue for me. It's also a big reason why I luuuurve Music Mans. ;) If you're a fan of big necks though Warmoth offers that Boatneck (i think thats what its called) replacement neck.

I like the idea of building custom axes but for the life of me I just can't justify the loss incurred when re-selling Warmoth guitars. For me to build something I have to want to hang onto it for life, and I've never settled on one design or configuration for that length of time.

Re: Fender Eric Clapton Strat.

Man, $600 for a Clapton Strat is a steal. I'd be all over it.

As for the electronics, MikeRocker, the only thing active about it is the midrange boost circuit. The Lace Sensors are passive pickups and can be used without the midrange boost. I'm not much of a fan of the Lace Sensors myself but I've heard worse.

The neck of the early Claptons is what helped me decide on the profile for my own frankenstrat, 1" deep boat contour from Warmoth. It's the perfect profile for me. The early Clapton models weren't as deep as that but the shape is what I wanted, that soft V.

oooooh, the things i would do with that guitar MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Re: Fender Eric Clapton Strat.

That is a great price for that guitar. One of my favorite all-time solos was recorded using the Clapton Strat with Lace Sensors-Warren Haynes' on "Blue Sky" from An Evening With (The Allman Brothers). Joe Bonamassa uses one also and it sounds great-check out his DVD that came with his last CD.

I don't think Clapton's tone is bad with either the lace sensors or the newer vintage noiseless pickups. I have seen him several times in concert and his tone is always awesome. If anyone's tone has gone downhill from using the lace sensors, its Townshends- and I am a huge Who fan!!

Re: Fender Eric Clapton Strat.

Townshends tone is not the same as it once was.. thats for sure... i enjoy the mid 70's custom made Hiwatt WHO heads and Les Paul Deluxes era myself... But i do enjoy Petes current sounds as well.... I find it strange that on his Clapton strats that he has a Fishman Bridge that is plugged into a Fender Acoustisonic amp and Pete is generally playing thru His Electric amps and his Acoustisonic in stereo..... I have some EC STrat era Who recordings of shows that Petes tone is thin and others are amazing.... I think the Concert For New York show was the best tone yet pete got with the strats and vibroking amps....

Yes, I had Gold Lace Sensors in my old Strat Plus. They were OK, but I wasn't nuts about 'em, and swapped 'em for an SSL-1/SSL-1/SSL-2 combo. The sound of the Laces is OK, but that Clapton sound with the mid-boost is just awful, in my opinion.

I purchased the Red model for my Strat and it didn't stay in it very long. Sure it was hot but not clear enough. It sounded muffled to me.

Exactly my thought. I don't like active electronics.

The key to using the mid-boost is moderation.

With my EC Strat I find I usually have the volume down around halfway for rhythm and will put the midrange just around or below 1 to make it a little cheeky, but just barely. It adds a certain warmth to the tone there.

For solos I bring the volume up to around 8 or 9, rarely dimed.

To me the mid-boost makes the Laces really get some nice vintage warmth to them, but you just have to BARELY be using it.

The EC's just behave so differently and counter-intuitive from other guitars.
