Duncan, by contract with Fender, can't sell it or even discuss specifications. Its been covered here before.

EVH/Fender may decide to sell it at some point. To date though they are not as far as I know.

i was reading through the links and some one said it was 13.75k with an alnico 2 magnet?anyone know if this is correct?if so that is almost the same as a peavey wolfgang which is 13.85k with a different magnet. wolfgang uses the alnico 5...

It's also in the FAQs... that's partially the reason the EVH was renamed the 78. EVH can be an acronym for "Evenly Voiced Harmonics", but EVH is owned as a trademark by Eddie Van Halen and his people, much like FZ is owned by the zappa family.

If you say "EVH pickup" to an SD representative, they'll say it off the record due to its reputation, but they can't put it as EVH on the site, however they will say the EVH is the 78 on the phone and in email to clarify things

To be clear, Evan has said the 78 model available from the Custom Shop is not the same as the EVH model pickup they make for Fender

Re: Fender EVH frankenstrat pickup?????

Guys,
The EVH 78 and the pup that comes in the Frankenstrat are 2 different pickups, I've played the Fender Frankenstrat replica, before I played it I went out and bought an EVH 78 and put it in my frankenstrat that I built, it sounded good, but then I went and played the Fender Frankenstrat and I could tell they were not the same pickup, I then contacted SD and someone in the custom shop whose name I will not say informed me that if I was looking to get a tone as close to the pup in the frankenstrat that I needed to get a SD Custom Custom, he infromed me that this pup had an Alnico II bar in it just like the pup in the Frankenstrat, only it was a little hotter than the pup in the frankenstat but not really that noticeable. And on top of that they sent it to me for free! This pickup rocks it's got TONE and some crazy harmonics on it as well. I don't think anybody out there would be disappointed with this little baby.

Re: Fender EVH frankenstrat pickup?????

The Custom Custom or the '59/C5 hybrid are the closest to my ears.

Re: Fender EVH frankenstrat pickup?????

The Custom Custom was made for Ed for his Krammer -poplar and Floyd. It is chewy and meaty in the mids.

The EVH 78 really works best with a Fender type tremelo, ash body.

The 59 is very nice in an alder body.

The EVH replica pickup is avaliable to buy. Should be similar to the custom custom, but more open sounding. Best with a floyd rose and ash
