Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

I'll talk to my guy at GC tomorrow and get him to make a call to Scottsdale ;) . He's always in relatively close contact with the guys at Fender and they're always very up-front about whats going down.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

Itll be sad if they discontinue them. I do agree they are good for modding and giving your own personal feel to. I believe imo that the finish does make a difference aswell not only does it look great but my highway1 strat unplugged is acoustically louder and sustains longer then any other electric ive played unplugged i think thats always a good thing to look for when buying a new guitar.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

my local dealer said the same thing, they are discontinuing them. He also said pretty soon he's lowering his prices on them to $499. He's got a couple in the store, I might just have to buy one.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

I really jope they aren't discontinued either; but Fender does that kind of crap all the time. They'll issue something new and really cool. Then, by the time I have saved enough of my pennies to buy whatever it is, they discontinue it or they change their offering of finishes and they won't offer the finish I wanted...or somethining else of that nature.

I was in the market for another Tele. I wanted something like a Nocaster without the Nocaster price. I'd feel really bad modding a Nocaster also; I would want to keep it stock. The Highway 1 has a thin nitro finish that tends the ding and blemish easily. This is cool for the player who wants the look of a road-weary axe without paying the relic price; but with the satisfaction of "relicing" it naturally...

I called up my GC here in Cincy since I had a gift card from Christmas. I asked for a Highway 1 Tele in honey blonde and a maple fretboard. My sales guy tells me that they are no longer carrying the Highway 1 in honey blonde. He says that there are two left in the whol chain's inventory. He said they would seel it to me at their cost; about $350.00. I said "Get it here." He then told me that one couldn't ship because of some agreement woth the store it was at. I told him to ship the other. He said that he found out that there was a small ding on it. He said it was where the forearm would rest. I said how much off for a damaged Tele. He ended up selling it to me for about $300 total. I bought it.....

I think it's a great pice of gear; no matter the price point....

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

Well I don't think it is a conspiracy- I just think Fender has a plan to only have certain models for a few years, then swap out some parts, roll out the new model, have a big press push, grab guitar mag 'reviews', wait a year or 2 and do it all over again. Keeps people talking, and at at least mildly interested. This also allows people to investigate their higher-end models. Remember, Fender's strategy is built upon the home organ principle- you buy a cheaper Fender, then continue to buy a more expensive one each year as you grow older and your income increases.
I am only interested on what they will 'switch around' and re-sell essentially the same guitar over and over.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

While I've never heard the term before, I assumed he was using "Ping-made" as shorthand for "Made in Tai Ping" thus using Tai Ping as a proxy for all of Asia. I could be way off, though.

Ping-made? Apologies for hi-jacking but what does that mean?

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

I thought that Ping tuners were made by a company called Ping. Not the golf club guys, but another maker.

The finish is a thin laquer, but not nitro. I have a Hwy1 tele in the classic burst and it's a keeper.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

How long did they sell the "California" series? Not that long.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

Or the Tex-Mex series...the Tele I bought (HS, with 5-way switch and overwound pups) was only made for about a year and a half.

Re: Fender Highway 1 Discontinued ????

I think the California Series were better guitars in terms of hardware and finish. The story I've heard is that there was some pressure on Fender to discontinue or change the marketing of the California Series as Made in USA since substantial finish work was done in Mexico. The HWY1 series goes the other way -- finish work done in the USA, but all offshore or MiM parts, including Ping tuners and bridges. Perhaps there has been renewed concern about whether they really warrant the MIA labeling?

The HWY1 parts are similar to what you get with the MiM Standards (tuners) and Classics (bridges and pickups). The necks are similar to current American Series (but with standard truss rod and no microtilt), so they are very nice. The bodies are OK, and the finish is a matter of taste. At the usual 30% off they aren't very attractive to me, but at deeper discounts they are certainly noteworthy, especially as vehicles for modding. Wait for the prices to fall to 50% of list or lower and snap 'em up.
