Fender Jazz bass pickup

I have had my Fender MIM Jazz Bass sitting in my basement for sometime. I use it once in a blue moon and I didn't really pay attention to its tone. Now I'm thinking about using it on more reqularly and I wonder if I should put some new pickups in it to get better sounds. Are there any bass gurus out there that play mostly blues, rock & roll, country and ballads and wish to help me out. Or may be you consider the sound is good enough already and I shouldn't even fool around with it? Any suggestion is appreciated. I seldom slap my bass (unless it gets really naughty, hehe).

Re: Fender Jazz bass pickup

I use a SJB-2 Bridge Hot and a Duncan stacked J-bass Pup in the neck.(not sure of the # STK-J ??) with the hot Bridge PuP I can get that J-bass snarling pig grind (think Tom Hamlton on `Walk this way') The neck PuP is smoother and quite and rounds out the overall tone.

Re: Fender Jazz bass pickup

I have a set of "Hot" for Jazz Bass pickups in an MIM Jazz and the improvement is huge over the stock pickups. This is especially true if your bass is the pre 2002 model that uses the same size and wind pickup in both neck and bridge. If you have the older model you will need to trim the pickguard and possibly the bridge route a bit to make the standard size pickups fit. It's really minor though.

With the "Hots" you can expect a louder and more full tone with much more openess and better harmonic content. Again, if you have the older model you will also notice much more difference in tone between the neck and bridge pickups.

Re: Fender Jazz bass pickup

Thanks for your help guys. The Hot JB pickup is probably what I need. My axe is an older model so I probably have to do some modification to get it fit, which is not a problem for me. I really appreciate your suggestions.
