Re: Fender No-Load Tone Pot

You can create a no load pot out of every standard poti. Scratch off the resistance path on the end of the turn. This creates a zone in which there is no connection from the middle lug to the outer lugs resp. to ground (when used as tone pot) or signal (when used as volume pot).

Re: Fender No-Load Tone Pot

Instead of taking the pot apart and scratching off the end of the resistive strip inside the pot you can also take a stock pot apart and then paint over that part of the tail end of the resistive strip with fingernail polish. Works perfectly.

In terms of the diff in sound between a no-load tone pot and a regular tone pot, if you're a sensitive player you might notice a little more clarity and treble when the no-load tone is turned to "10" compared to a regular pot.

EVH used to not use a tone pot for that reason and a no-load tone pot achieves the same effect as having no tone pot when it's on "10" but functions like a normal tone pot when it's turned down below about "8" or "9".
