Fender parallel universe Jazz Tele

Am I alone in thinking this is sort of cool? The P90’s give this a pretty cool tone. It’s good to see Fender trying new things, even if it’s mixing and matching old ideas.

^Not P90s.

I once made something almost identical, but with a standard Tele guard and the vibrato moved forward to Classic Player location for visual balance (because I had a lot of extra Jazzmaster parts and a random Tele body is cheap.)

Not P-90’s? Are they a special jazzmaster pickup? They look p90-ish *♂️

Yup, JM pickups are wound differently and have a flatter wind than a P90 as well as magnetic polepieces. P90s have nonmagnetic screws and two bar magnets under the pickup.

Cool basic idea, incompletely executed IMO. The pickguard is ugly as hell. If it just covered the entirety of the horn, it would help a lot. And the thing should have the rhythm circuit; what were they thinking not putting it in there!

P.S. The headstock is ugly. WHY!

It's pretty cool to have an "instant gain" switch depending on the settings of the rhythm/lead volume and tone; same basic thing as the dual volume/tone controls on a Les Paul etc. with some key different benefits/limitations, if only people could come to grips with that. I normally have my tone rolled back anyway, so I do now use the rhythm section alone... But there was a time I didn't so I left the rhythm switch and knobs off my own Telemaster/Jazzcaster as well.

A Deluxe-style pickguard would have looked better IMO; on mine I admittedly compromised functionality somewhat by using a standard Telecaster pickguard and shoving the Jazzmaster bridge pickup right up against it because I liked the look (I hated the idea of extending the guard or having a gap.) It actually sounded pretty good. My biggest visual nitpick on Fender's version is still the vibrato plate edge basically next to the strap button. I know why this was done but I described my solution. I used a matched CBS Strat neck on mine as well; just my preference style-wise.

(Full disclosure- I still have this guitar but view it as a bit of a past heresy; feel like parting out from time to time...)

Thank you. That’s a good explanation. I’ve never owned any Fenders other than Strat’s and Tele’s. I just thought this particular model seemed pretty neat and would probably offer a player more tones for their palette if a guy was searching for something different.

All of your points are valid. I guess people can disagree on the aesthetics, but I agree with you on the pickguard and headstock.

I am not sure I dig the 'combine features from many past models' design ideas that Fender has had lately. Yeah, it looks sort of familiar, but not everything is really their best ideas. They added that trem for looks, not for function, for instance.
