I hope you didn't take that as a personal attack, it was just a small joke brother.
There's a huge difference between a $400 Fender and a $800 one. The $400 will make you feel good about holding onto those last 2 or 3 paychecks to get the Fender you had GAS for, and the $800 will make you feel like you made a good choice.
I'll go through some Fenders just so you get an idea of what these things are like...

1- 03-04' Fender MIM Telecaster.
This guitar was decent stock. It's much better than a Squier Tele I once had, and kicks the crap out of most guitars in it's price range. It's also built like a rock, I've dropped it several times and it's fine. Try that with one of those Epi G-400s.
After sanding the poly finish almost completely off and sanding off most of the finish on the back of the neck, the guitar resonates so much better, it's mind blowing. add Schaller locking tuners, swapping in and out a variety of pickups, adding the vintage style bridge fender uses on its higher end american teles and a switch for putting the pickups in and out of phase, it's a monstrous guitar... but none of that changed the playability. It sounds great, and no doubt: the neck feels comfortable but the action isnt really as low as many people here would use it, even with a pro setup..

2- 2000 Fender Tom DeLonge stratocaster
This guitar had a much nicer finish on the body and neck. the one on the neck seemed more evenly applied and doesnt stick to your hand very much, while the one on the body is very thin, even though it's poly. the wood on the fingerboard is nice, it doesnt dry out too often, less than cheaper guitars do.
I got my tele for around $350 back in the day*
I bought my Tom DeLonge strat for around $450-500 dollars. It's a "deluxe" series stratocaster, which means it's still mexican but is getting closer to american "quality".
it came with a Seymour Duncan Invader in the bridge (only pickup)
the pickup itself is like $60-80 (dont know sorry) so that's pretty rad. tuning keys are the "vintage" style ones fender uses, I love them, they're very good quality. not much to say here, the difference in quality is apparent and this strat is easier to play than my tele.

I have no idea how much these retailed for, but i saw one on ebay for around 600 bucks.
the sunburst one in the picture up there. sadly this guitar is no longer mine... im not THAT sad. quality is on par with the Black jaguar, more on that later.
everything is great quality on this guitar, from strap button to the top of the headstock. mine was pretty beat.
the finish on the neck and the body seems even better than the previous Strat. (smooth, thin, well applied).

The reason that I like my HWY1 Strat because of the neck, the standard MIM or standard American strat don't have the jumbo frets. And it would probably cost the same to buy fender HWY1 parts from ebay and put together, but I wouldn't have much of resale value then. Although I don't plan on selling it.

ya the semi hollow and shove a bigsby on it. wacky but cool tone.
I was a bit turned off by these guitars, but the more I look at that semi hollow strat, the more I'm diggin' it

Hey, where's the love for the jag-stang! At least it has a real mustang "dynamic vibrato," classic fender colors, mustang switching, and traditional mustang neck. The jag-stang takes some heat, but I love mine! The pawn shop series looks cool, and while I love mustangs, that would be my last choice from the group. Too bad they didn't make a jaguar or jazzmaster version!

Actually considering the MIM Fender '51s are $800 I think it DOES raise the value of the Squier '51s as people are a little leery at spending $800 on a guitar that can be had much less and I'm guessing the quality might not warrant that price difference. I have a Squier '51 and the weakest part of it was the fret ends but I opted for a wider neck so I ditched the neck for a Warmoth 1 3/4". I still got to get this put back together.
