Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

I am already selfishly scouting my next purchase when tax season arrives, and have pretty much narrowed in on the Pro Reverb and the Twin. EVERY time I go to GC, I spend at least a half-hour on each, but you just never know until you get one home. What are the pro's/cons from your experiences. I know the damn thing weighs like 80 pounds, so weight is a downfall. But, I will protect my investment and buy and ATA roller-flight case for easier/safer transporting. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Oh yeah, some specific questions.....

Did modulation through the FX Loop stand out in a good way?
Is the hi-gain channel any good?
What are the tonal differences between the two? (Lew??)

Don't know about the new re-issues, but I have a 1968 "drip-edge" Pro reverb w/ Blackface specs. It's a great jazz amp as long as u'r drummer doesn't get too loud to out crank the headroom of the 40 watt amp. Also, mine only weighs in a 53lbs. I love mine dearly!!!

Again: I don't know anything about the re-issue!

Re: Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

I've never played a Pro, but you have to crank a Twin pretty loud before it starts to sound really good, too lound for most situations I'm in. You might want to take a look at the old Prosonic heads. They were 60 watts and had a pretty good high gain channel, which is rare in a Fender.

That is true, but it does have a 1/4 power switch that gives some mean tones at 25 watts. I usually mic my amps to get wide even projection, even if I have enough volume from the amp. I am hoping this will settle my GAS for awhile. It will be the first BRAND NEW Professional Equipment I purchase!

Re: Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

or you could get a 65 reissue, 85 watts

still more than god would need to play for the entire country of china...from hawaii, but, if you typically play really loud, it'd be more practical

or a good 'ol attenuator

Re: Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

I actually bought a new "Evil" Twin and kept it for a full 2 days. :)

It was just too loud when it started to sound good. The cleans were awesome, and it would rock if the wattage reduction was footswitchable, but as it stands, it's too much amp for me.

Right now, I'm looking at lower powered combos, like the Supers, 59 Bassman RI's, and the Mesa Boogie Maverick.

Re: Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

benjy, you realize you can ebay a bassman head & mod it to blackface specs for less money than a reissue bassman, right?

The Twin and ProReverb both have 1/4 switches which take them down to 25 watts and 12.5 watts respectively while still giving the same buttery tones. I would consider adding yet another pedal to my Pedalboard, but both aforementioned models have Footswitchable FX Loops, so I wouldnt NEED it.

I always wanted a '65 Twin Custom 15, but with 85 watts and no 1/4 power switch, it is too much power for daily jamming. Would be great for gigging, though!

Re: Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

Haven't played the pro, but I have played the concert and twin. I found the twin a bit disappointing sounding with single coils, and okay with humbuckers.

I really liked the concert. Have you tried one?

The Pro Tube Series amps are probably the most versatile tube amps Fender has ever come out with. As soon as they came out, I was looking for a good all-purpose tube amp and bought a Concert Reverb (2001).
Really a great sounding and practical amp to own! Because they're deeper than a Super Reverb, the lows are bigger sounding, and the clean channel is just like a 65 Super or Twin Reissue. Even without the 1/4 power switch, the master volume lets you get the volume really low. The gain channel is everything Fender SHOULD have done for the past 40 years. I was able to get every shade of gain out of it, including Santana-like sustain and even metal tones. The Pro is even more practical for home practice situations and is loud enough to go above a drummer. They all have basically the same circuit, only the Twin has two more tubes. The only difference is the speaker configuration. I like the Concert the best, but the Pro is a good choice. I'd definitely buy a Pro Tube amp over a 65 Reissue anyday. Way more features and variety of tones. Plus the tube reverb and tube driven tremolo sound lush and beautiful. New $1100-$1269. Used $800

Re: Fender Pro Reverb or Twin-Amp

i dont know, i think 85 watts is just right for me now. I took everyones advice on not having too much wattage so you can crank it up, but now that i enjoy having a mountain of clean headroom, i can't get my peavey to clean up at higher volumes.

If you want to drive up your amp use the twin with a spina TS9.

I have a Bassman head. It's a 71 Export amp trhat still sports the blackface circuit.

I like the 59 Bassman because it's a completely different animal from the BF version. :burnout:
