Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

I've been searching for a great clean tone to dirty up for a blues band. So I have an opportunity to grab one of these, very nice non-master volume that has been black faced. Anyone have experience with one of these? Does it take to pedals OD well? Also at one on the volume - is it too loud for home use?

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

a non-mv super is probably a nice amp, especially if it was blackfaced properly. it should take pedals very well. you should be able to get it down low enough for home use, it wont have the same tonal qualitys as when its on 3 but should be workable

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

Well I went ahead and picked this amp up. Fantastic tone! I do have a few questions for you experts. This amp was blackfaced - do these amps typically begin to break up around 3 on the volume knob? This one does, just want to see if I should be concerned. Also, can anyone recommend tubes for this, I'm gonna have my tech do a run through to get it gig "ready". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

with buckers it might break up at 3, shouldnt with a strat till maybe 5. i like short bottle 6l6 tubes, the tads are nice so are the gt6l6ge. lots of different options. got pics?

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

I will try and post some pics later. Didn't get home with it until late. I was using a humbucker on the second channel and it was breaking up around 3 - pretty distorted at 5. Short bottle 6l6s, can I grab those at a local store or does have to be online?

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

I am NOT an expert...But I do have a 65 SR and a properly set up and maintained SR should not break up at 3. You should get more headroom than that out of it. However everyone's idea of "breakup" is subjective ofcourse.
BUt if it is starting to get dirty at 3 I would suspect maybe geting the tubes rebiased. I did notice with my SR that it is quite sensitive to the current draw on the tubes. I have a pair iof Winged C 6L6GCs biased at 37mA....I love the way it sounds..... When was the last maintenance performed....many things could lead to too early of a break up.......

I sort of thought that as well, I'm a little concernd. I'm hoping this stuff is fixable? I'm not sure when the last time it was serviced. I don't have an issue getting new tubes and getting it biased more worried it could be something that can't be fixed.

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

is the bottom end still tight? there are alot of things that can make the amp break up earlier, but checking the bias is a good place to start. the short bottle tads you probably have to get on line but maybe not, the gt are probably easier to get but are probably more expensive.

it can ALL BE FIXED:1:

start with the easy stuff first. Check things before buying anything. Fortunately if it does need some capacitor replacement and other minor things to get it up to snuff those parts are inexpensive. I wouldn't arbitrarily change out the power tubes as a troubleshooting method. Good Luck.
Are you OK with doing stuff to your amp or do you know someone??

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

thats great that you know a tech that you trust. He probably has tubes and stuff lying around he can use for troublesgshooting too!! Good Luck!!

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

I've owned a SF NMV SR for about 15 years. It is one of if not the best blues amps ever! By comparison to a lot of other Fenders I feel these are a little better because of the 4 10's. The bottom is very strong, yet the amp has a great clean tone. The Bright switch will help tame the thickness of Humbeuckers, but you may want to turn it off with single coils. They take pedals very well. My board was and still is pretty basic. I used a Boss CE2, a DD3 a Tubescreamer and a Wah. All worked great in this amp. The only thing I have done to mine was retube it. Other than that it has been trouble free. It was completely gone over when I first bought it. The speakers are not original and I don't even know what speakers are in it. It is a great amp and I would recommend you buy it.

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

I'm really excited about this amp. I bought it specifically for a blues band I play in! Thanks for all the help.

One of the things I've found over the years is many guys when black facing the silver face amps, frequently use the wrong dropping resistors in the power supply B+ rail and because of dumb advice from a few well known "amp gurus"... use way too big of a coupling cap from the 220K channel resistors to the phase inverter.
Make sure your tech understands how the SF and BF amps were different and will replace the "mixed up stuff" as needed.

Have your tech check the rectifier tube. A lot of times when a tech does a "black face" job they seem to forget that the silver and the black used different tubes. This can have a big effect on your headroom. ;)
Good Luck

Re: Fender Silverface Super Reverb?

Thanks for all the great advice, I just spent about 6 hours playing the amp and I've NEVER had this kinda fantastic tone, its just not comparable to anything I've had. I no longer feel guilty selling my DSL 50 head to pay for this :-)
