Fender Strat Trems: 2 Point vs. 6 Screw Vintage

Re: Fender Strat Trems: 2 Point vs. 6 Screw Vintage

My preference is for the two screw variety only because I'm use to Gibson stop-tail with two posts. One strat in the house has the six screws while the other one has the two posts. Really can't tell the difference since there is a difference in pups (Am Stds v 69's) and wood (alder v basswood). Both set so that they play like hard-tails. Thinking about putting a left handed term on the two post.

Re: Fender Strat Trems: 2 Point vs. 6 Screw Vintage

All I know is my Mexican Strat has the 6 screw tremolo and my 1,300 dlls American Standard comes with the two point system... In my experience the 2 point is way easier to set it floating and it's better balanced... More sustain as well....
But barely noticeable... I thibk the two point tremolo makes more sense and is better. If it wasn't that's what they would put in the MIM strats...

I like the new 2-point with stamped saddles. Nice compromise of tone and tuning stability.

Another one here for the 2-point, IMO much better design for a floating tremolo. The 6 hole works well but in my experience works best set up for the tremolo bar to only go down.

Re: Fender Strat Trems: 2 Point vs. 6 Screw Vintage

The 2 point Trem is kind of awkward. It works, but I find it to be less stable. The way the bridge mounts is on a fulcrum type of design and I just think it is a lot less stable from the limited experience I have had working on a few guitars that have them.

I own 5 Strats & I feel I get much better tone & sustain with the traditional 6 screw style. I also set my guitars up with the bridge resting on the body. It sustains better & again the guitar stays in tune better especially if you break a string. I am really considering(and I mean considering) to set one up with the bridge floating so I can get into the Jeff Beck, David Gilmore type of whammy action. I am afraid of all of the instability that it will cause. I may do it anyway. The Strats just seem to sing with more sustain when the bridge is in contact with the body.

Don't live in fear Dave hahaha

I have both two point and six screw Wilkys. I like them both and have no tuning issues with either. However, I slightly prefer the feel and quicker response of the two point style.

Re: Fender Strat Trems: 2 Point vs. 6 Screw Vintage

I usually have the trem flat on the guitar. I don't like using the stratocaster vibrato, it's not smooth like a bigsby and not extreme like a floyd. It's lukewarm.

^ Probally tried a few then eh??!
;)
Bigsby is just...well no nice way of describing that thing.
Floyds are also very different, from Floyd to Floyd.

Not to be argumentative, but "lukewarm" is not a good word here. The Strat Tremolo was not desinged to be smooth like a Bigsby nor was it designed to dive-bomb like a Floyd...it was designed to offer vibrato. Apparently Fender got confused on the terms as they called a Vibrato Unit a "Tremolo" and called a Tremolo Unit/Effect "Vibrato".

Also, you can set up the Standard Strat to be tight or loose, there is not one way to set 'em up. ;)
