Fender Super Amp - any good?

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

It’s a steal!

Yeah, I know that, but is it a great amp or not. I love the Super Reverb, but this is a different beast and I don't know anything about it.

What do you know about it? Tone/quality/versatility/dependability/functionality...? Effects loop?

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

Wasn't the Super Amp series pretty much a reduced power variation on the "evil" Twin Amp model?

If so, the clean sound will be heavenly and the overdrive channel will disappoint the shredder in you. (Get a distortion pedal!)

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

They're one of the classic amps of all time IMO. Classic BF Fender warmth, but with 10's. They're not reminiscent of a Twin IMO. Kind of like a Princeton times 4. (I've had both.) Nice wattage/headroom at 45 or 60 watts, depending on which one you get. Breaks up nice, but not like a Twin. A Twin up loud is like a bronco kicking you in the chest. I guess in comparison, this would be more like a donkey. Still hurts like hell, but not as brutal. Also, they're kind of an awkward size.

I'd rather wait it out and get one with reverb, myself. I sold my Super Reverb RI a few years ago for $650. That said, if you have absolutely no use for on-board reverb, go for it!

Effects loop? I doubt it if it is a RI, but maybe. I'd just think of it as a BF RI Fender amp, and consider any modern features to be a bonus.

Somebody misread the OP.

The Nineties Fender Super Amp is a modern, channel switching valve amplifier dressed up to look like a vintage amp. It done got spring reverb. It done got a pre-out, power-in loop. It might even have a "quarter power" switch for use in small venues.

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

I didn't "misread" ****. I just don't know what the amp is! Call me ignorant, not a poor reader! :D

To the OP, please ignore all my comments. They are in reference to the RIs. I assumed this was one of the RIs with a hopped up power amp (60W vs. 45W) and no reverb.

Relax, bro.

In the Craigslist rear view photograph, the reverb spring tank, loop sockets and level selector switch are all visible.

For advanced anoraks, the recreated "underswept" Fender logo is not entirely true to Sixties spec either.

Doc. The amp is great for traditional Fender clean. If you expect dirt from the Overdrive channel, seek out a HR DeVille or a Super Sonic.

Itsa, for what it is worth, I got to try a Fender Pro-Amp series "custom" Vibrolux Reverb last week. Absolutely superb.

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

Man, I was joking! I though the "ignorant" comment and smiley face would be the tip off. I am totally relaxed. Just ate a corned beef and mustard sandwich and potato-leek soup in bed! Life is good. Ahhhhhhh!

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

These were in the very first series of Fender "Pro Tube" series amps, they were a cross between classic and modern designs...

There was the Super, Twin and Concert...the Super and Concert are the same chassis but one is a 4x10 and one is a 1x12 then the Twin was 100 watts into 2x12's.

Think very close to Blackface cleans with a crunch channel that IMHO smokes all the Hot Rod amps people seem to love!

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

Sounds delicous. I had me some corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and parsnips for dinner. Life IS good.

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

Thanks for that bit of info, TGWIF.

So, I see on ebay a Concert amp with 4x10s and one with 1x12. So, is that 4x10 exactly the same amp as the Super? Why would they make two identical amps but with different names? It would make sense if the Super always had 4x10 and the Concert always had 1x12. This is so confusing to me.

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

I hated the clean channel on the one I played. It was like a bad silverface haha. BUt the crunch channel sounded ok. Like a decent JCM800.

IMO I like the newer hot rods better.

Re: Fender Super Amp - any good?

It was a super 410 like the one in the ad and the salesmen told me it was from the 90s. Did they have many ifferent series like that?

That's the ones...

I think the cleans are pretty good.

Stock tubes were not great and I have heard from some folks that a speaker upgrade really opens them up but like I said I felt like they were solid sounding amps as-is.

Just curious since you didn't like the cleans...
