Fender SuperSonic vs...

So lately I've been assembling my dream rig in my head. Orange Thunderverb 50 head, and Fender DRRI for high gain and cleans, respectively. Run em together for some killer crunchy tones. However, the DRRI doesn't have an effects loop, which is almost mandatory for me in a clean amp.

Which brought me to the Fender SuperSonic 22. While I would *never* touch the gain side, the clean channel looks very promising. I've also looked at the 60w model for added headroom when (if) needed.

However, I know very little about other comparable Fender amps, or anything similar really. So what'll get me where I wanna get, at a reasonable price point?

Why do you need an FX loop? As I understand it, the main point of it is to put your effects after the preamp distortion, and if you're running the amp clean there is little difference.

I was having a similar debate a few months ago. Deluxe Reverb or SS22. I, like you, was turned off by the lack of an effects loop on the DR. I thought I had to have one, or the amp wouldn't be useable. Then my g/f bought a 68 Bassman head which I've used extensively since then. I realized that if I'm just playing clean, there's no need for an effects loop. I actually stopped using the effects loop on my Mesa because of it (I never use the drive channel). It also happens that I played a SS22 at a shop right after getting to try out a '74 Deluxe Reverb. The SS22 sounded awful in comparison, there was no life in it at all. The '74, on the other hand, sounded amazing. If you do some searching, you can probably find an early 70's Deluxe Reverb for a good price, and that's what I'd go with. If that's out of your price range, try the DRRI. You can always mod it up later.

Thunderverb 50 + SuperSonic 60 sounds like a GREAT combo.

I guess more for the convenience and versatility of having it. It's not a deal breaker to not have it anyways.

I agree if you are using a drive channel on the amp. But if not, it doesn't really make a difference to my ears.

Hey Sir Jack, how you like that TV 50?

LOVE IT !

I am really impressed with what that amp can do, and how it sounds.
The clean tone on channel B rivals that of my beloved 50W Bassman.
The gain on this amp is what i really like.
Two channels with a gain knob each.
And they are voiced differently !
What i like to do is play the amp like a non master vol amp. Crank the Vol. knob, and bring up the gain knob, just to to point of a slight break up, for that classic 70's OR80/OR120 kinda vibe. (on Channel A)
On the other hand, you can also dial the amp in, to get a DOWN (more modern) type of tone.
Seeing that the amp is based around EL34's, playing Led Zep tunes, is where this amp really shines (to my ears off course)
To me, it sounds like a slightly re-voiced, and LESS compressed Marshall with a much warmer / more lush (and that is a good thing) overall all tone.
Sounds a bit wrong for AC/DC songs though, especially if you want to hear them being played accurately, but pretty much any other Marshall performed songs sounds great through this amp !


Not impressed with the reverb though. Anything above '1.5', is too much for me.
The reverb knob is almost, 'all-or-nuffing'.

Get a Rivera. You'll only need one anp to cover those tones that way.
