Im lookin for a good tube amp that will get "high volume dirty" and clean. Kinda of a blues sound. I play a strat and a les paul. The amp will have to be kinda loud too, so that i can play with my band. Please give me your imput on some of the Fenders like the:

Twin amp
Twin Reverb
Super Reverb
Deluxe Reverb
Bassman

Or anyother suggestions.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Fender tube amps.

I'm guessing your saying you want some dirt on your clean, not much but enough to flavor, my vote goes for the bassman.

Here's a great website for you: http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/

An interesting thread about how useful a little one can be: http://www.thefenderforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10721

Based on my experience (IMHO, YMMV, etc., etc.), you can get the great sounds you describe from quite a few Fender amps. The Twin Reverb is not really going to break up much, and if it does you can expect a visit from the local constabulary and a thumbs down from the soundman (unless you are playing Wembley). The Deluxe Reverb is considered a great club amp but may get a bit flatulent in the bottom end due to the 6V6 tubes and the general design of the amp. That said, you should try one out...some just seem to be less flatulent than others. The Super Reverb is LOUD as well but is a great amp. I have an old Pro Reverb and I love it...I'm a big 2x12 fan. Some folks say that the output transformer isn't macho enough, but it works for me. Back to your question...the Fender heads (both blackface and silverface) are pretty good deals, but they don't have reverb, an effect many feel is an integral part of the 60's Fender sound. But Peter Green got some nice tones out of a Showman and a reverb unit. A tweed amp will probably make you happy, too...depends on what you like.

I guess it depends on how loud you want to be (and how loud your band is and what kind of places you play), what kind/configuration of speakers you like, how much clean headroom you need, tube/solid state rectifier, and if you want a tweed sound or a blackface/silverface sound. If you use, say, a Super Reverb you can get a huge array of tones from the amp and a couple pedals...the great thing about that type of setup is that the clean sound will sound freakin' fantastic and you can really pick and choose your flavors of distortion.

Many silverface amps are great deals and can usually be modded back to blackface specs. The original amps were all point-to-point hand wired and amp techs are usually really happy to see them.

I went through the search you are on recently, PM me if you want. Good luck. The good thing is that you get to try a bunch of great amps.

Re: Fender tube amps.

Yeah I agree re the Twin. I use one, and it's great for giving you plenty of clean volume. But if you want any overdrive it's going to have to be from a pedal.

In saying that I get great comments on my blues style sounds using a G2D Custom Overdrive in front of a Twin.

Re: Fender tube amps.

A Twin will make u'r ears bleed before it breaks-up. I'd go for an old pro-reverb or super-reverb.

Re: Fender tube amps.

I've had most of them and have to agree with Falstaff on most everything (I've never found a Fender head I liked but I'm sure they are out there). My favorites are the Super Reverb and Vibro King. On a budget go for a silverface SR (not the RI)--you can always get it modded to BF specs later (cosmetically also, if you so desire).

If you are in a position to turn these two beasts up (LARGE club) it is absolute heaven. But they still sound FULL and FAT at reasonable volumes. And they clean up great with your guitats volume.

Re: Fender tube amps.

No!!!!!!! You are making me very mad. Change to Crate amps. Crate is the best!!
Nothing beats the sound of Crate. Come to where the light is. Please change to Crate products.

Re: Fender tube amps.

My vote goes for the '59 Bassman and a TS-9 or DS-1 for your overdrive tones.

The '59 Bassman is the amp Marshall copied to create the JTM-45 and the whole Marshall line in the 60's...it's my favorite of those you mentioned.

SRV used one almost exclusively on his last album...I thought it was the best recorded tone he ever got!

But they're all good choices...tho the Twin is awfully loud. To loud to crank up to 6 or 7 and get some natural distortion in most playing situations.

I have a Super Reverb, Deluxe Reverb and '59 Bassman...and love them all.
