Well, I dont mean that G&L are an inferior product. Just that the Fender strat was first, hence the G&L line is but a copy, although a very good, if not superior, product.
Gotcha. I'd agree with that.....along with your signature line of "Thou Not Spilleth Thy Beer". Finally, a passage from the bible I can embrace! That line must've been somewhere in the back.

Way back! :laugh2:

Actually, I think the original Hebrew message was:

Thou shalt not spilleth the sacremental wine.

But I could be wrong.

Re: Fender vs G&L Strat Shootout help wanted

know personal experience, but i would choose G & L, because all the fenders i have played are no wheres near worth the money.

Re: Fender vs G&L Strat Shootout help wanted

lol i think i'm the only one who likes fenders over G&L...not to say G&L are worse or better or whatever i just can't get passed the headstock shape and the trem so i stick with fenders. sure it may be an asthetic thing and sound silly to some but i'm not playing a guitar that i don't like to look at...

but as others said, G&Ls are some real nice guitars...if you don't mind the ugly headstock lol!

Fender: founded by Leo Fender
G&L: founded by Leo Fender

Leo designed both brands. Leo can't copy Leo.

If you want a REAL Fender, made the way it was intended, buy G&L. IMHO.

If all you are concerned with is whether you can sell it later at a good price, buy Fender.

If you want a high quality guitar that will give you years of playing pleasure, buy G&L.

Personally, I find that Fender and Gibson BOTH are resting on their laurels...

well put .. I guess I have a certain respect for the originator .. enough so that I would never call a legacy a strat copy .. or clone. but thats me.

I think that G&Ls are really well built guitars .. and one of the few remaining good deals around. I think you have to get into fenders custom shop stuff to match the quality of the G&Ls .. only the G&L will cost much less.

so, if Mr. Duncan sold off seymour duncan the company ... and then after some time passed he decided to start winding pups again .. would they be copies? or would they be more seymour than seymour?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??

Heritage is more original Gibson than Gibson.

Fender isn't even Fender, G&L is Fender.

Re: Fender vs G&L Strat Shootout help wanted

I had this conversation with a friend at work who is a die hard fender fan - he argued G&L is a copy - I asked him about the japanese fenders made in the 80's (probalby the best guitars being made with the Fender name on them at the time) are they copies or are they the real thing? His brain went into lock up mode and he really couldn't answer the question.

So what are they?

I recently had an opportunity to test a '97 Fender Strat Plus against a '96 G&L Legacy. I had wanted a Strat Plus for years, so was really pleased to get 1 on ebay. Because of the market over here, G&L's tend to be a little more expensive than Fenders, but I managed to find a Legacy that was £200-250 cheaper than you normally find them. I love every thing about Strats, and the G&L headstock takes some getting used to. I'm glad I had the chance to test them both, as I was only able to keep 1 of them, but I chose the G&L. For me, it just had a better feel and vibe and evoked the way Strats used to be made. The Strat was lovely, but felt sterile in comparison. It seems that Fender are just churning them off the production line and that G&L are putting a little more into their products. Of course each guitar is different and needs to be played but IMO the G&L product is above the curve set at Fender.

Thanks for your replies guys!

Another question - can you have a figured maple top on a solid color? Pics?

Bee, You can have a figured top under any color...but a solid black guitar is a solid black guitar (Cosmetics-wise), regardless of whether it´s Mahogany, alder, Maple, or a Funky Burlwood from Mars, it´s still gonna be solid black because of the paint :)

OR are you thinking trans top on a solid back? This can also be done, and is actually quite common... ;)

In my opinion, the G&L, S-500 is the best strat ever made! G&L's, build quality is better than any thing that was ever made by Fender. When Leo Fender started G&L his goal was to build a superior instrument, and he did it.

Cheers for the insight Zerb.

Sprinter, how does the S-500 compare to the Legacy?

The pickups in the S-500, are Leo Fender designed MFD (magnetic field design) pickups, which are hotter and quieter than an alnico pickup. The Legacy, has alnico pickups in it. The S-500 does a great job of overdriving an amp, while the Legacy is a bit whimpy.

The S-500, pickups sound the best in a mahogany body. Ash bodied S-500's, tend to be bright sounding, and harsh.

I have a Legacy. It's an excellent guitar. The trem is amazing for having nothing that locks on the guitar. Absolutely no tuning problems. The neck is great, the finish is flawless. The only problem? It's still a Strat.

I should have bought an ASAT. Oops. The Legacy will be for sale shortly.
