Fender Wide Range Ri cosmetic issues: how to fix them ?

I bought a pair of used Fender Wide Range RI to a guy on the internet, I received them today but and I wasn't expecting that one of them would come (not intentionally i guess) relic'ed !  :-\

As you can see, half of the chrome went off.

Now that the damage is done, I'd like to take off all the chrome but I don't know how to do it without damaging the metal underneath..
Any Idea on how to do this ??

After doing this, I'd like to clean up the cover (it seems to be oxidized)... I guess the best way of doing this is to polish it with a polishing paste but those pastes are different from one type of metal to another and I'm not sure of what metal the pickup covers are made... (nickel ?).. Any idea/infos on this ?

Thanks

It's a 30-year-old pickup...you gotta expect a little wear-n-tear.

That said, I'd just try to find a replacement cover for it. I know Fender's putting those covers on the pickups in the new 72 Deluxe reissues (so that they LOOK right at least) so maybe some parts shops around the net have spares.

No they're not originals, they are the reissue ones (that's "Ri" stands for in the thread title).
I'm ok with the worn look (they will be on a rusted pickguard so they'll match !) but i'd like to take off all the chrome because it tends to go off in small chips that go inside the cover and stick to the magnet.. not cool.
