What Fender amp (Fender and boutique versions) has the fattest/warmest clean? I'm not really looking for those bright, jangly cleans....but more those smokey, slightly overdriven blues style cleans.

Re: Fender

I don't know how loud you want, but the Blues Jr. is freakin' sweet. I'd definitely call it more warm than jangly.

Unfortunatly, neither do I. I know I want it as a mostly clean amp that'll OD, so I don't want too much headroom.....or too little.

It has to be able to balance volume-wise with an 85w MkIII. I'm thinking I could probably get away with a 50w non-MV amp.

Cool. I'll check one out (Bassman). The Blues Jr is 15w is it not? Probably a little small for what I want.

On a side note.....how does a 100w Plexi sound when dialed in clean?

Closer to a 59 Bassman Tweed amp in tone...Sought of...

Is it the Tweeds that are designed to OD, or are they the ones that're designed to stay cleaner?

Not if you want very little headroom. An amp with one-tenth the wattage is only half as loud. What is the volume setting on your Mesa?

Based on the idea of a Blackface Twin being the bee's knees of cleans, I'd say tweeds are the grindy ones.

Anywhere from 3 to 5.....depending on the venue. It's an open back combo (EV EVM 12L) that's also run into a Recto Std 4x12 (Vintage 30s)

I know the headroom formula, but I want this amp to stay reasonably (but not perfectly) clean. It's going to be recieving the repeat side of a wet/dry delay setup....and I might add stereo chorus to both amps later on.

Re: Fender

What's the difference in headroom and tone between a 100w Plexi and a JTM45?

Sorry for the rambling thread.....I'm going through idea's in my head. Can you tell I don't pay much attention to Fender or Marshall?

Re: Fender

FWIW, my dad's got an old Super Reverb (silver), and it breaks up, but doesn't get anywhere near what I call distortion. It's a 30watt 4X10, and gets loud as hell. When it's cranked, you can back off the volume a bit, and it'll clean up w/o losing volume.

well, the plexi is obviously gonna stay clean longer, but the overall tonal difference is... well they're basically the same amp

and yes as a rule blackfaces are cleaner & tweeds will grind like a mother****er

Re: Fender

F*cker.....

I thought I knew what I wanted (tone wise, not ampwise)....but the more I think about this the more confused I get. I think I need to experiment with this one a bit more.

On a side note.....runnning a MkIII's on it's lead channel and a Laney Iommi side by side is awe inspiring. Too bad I'm looking for a lower gain option.

JTM45- w/ tube rectifier....so 50 watts with a tube rectifier vs 100w with a solid state recitifier....JTM45 would get you more of a fat smokey tone, plexi is more about marshall grind, but it gets sweet cleans.

Re: Fender

+1 for the Fender '57 Tweed Twin-Amp. That thing is pretty damn loud, and pretty clean due to the dual rectifiers and higher wattage than a tweed bandmaster or bassman. Great stock speakers in that amp too, a little stiff at first, but give it about a week or two and it will start to do some smokin blues. Because tweed amps were made in the 50s, when electric guitar was made to amplifiy the sound of an acoustic guitar, they were meant for clean of course. But, without saying, they have some of the best (if not the best IMO) distortion tones that you can get. You can jump the two channels with a Y cable to get a real ballsy clean sound for blues.

I would also reccomend a Victoria 80212 amp, which is the high powered tweed twin. This will give you A LOT of headroom, but because it is a tweed, you might still be able to crank it a bit to get a pushed blues tone. I never played this amp and dont know how it rates in loudness compared to ure other amp, but im guessing that the Victoria is much louder. Just 2 suggestions...
