Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

Its nice - but its gonna make repair work a bit harder.

I actually a rosewood neck with a lighter fingerboard (Not necessarily maple) might look better.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

Looks to me as if they are wasting a fair amount of maple just to save a small amount of rosewood.

It could be they're just trying to make something cool and aren't worried too much about efficiency. Sometimes I put premium gas in my HHR just for that extra half-second off the drive to work.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

Its just 1 huge a** inlay. probably trivial with CNC carving.

Bound fingerboards look so cool so I like. Like I say, repair work is not going to be so easy. At the very least touch up work. Gonna cost ya $$ down the road.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

They gonna use this technique for maple fretboards too ?

I'd assume a refret would cost about the same as what it costs to refret a bound LP neck with this construction, although at least there are no maple 'nubs' at the end of the frets. Removing the board would be more difficult than removing the bound board from a Gibson.

nice, I like that. it'll look totally seamless looking down from a playing position.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

Looks pretty cool. I don't see how it would be more comfortable though. Petty easy to do with a CNC

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

yeah, saw this too. thought it was pretty cool looking. not sure if it will have any benefits other than asthetics. From looking at the demo vid, looks like the frets go to the edge of the board, so I dont think refrets will take any special care

As far as comfort, their theory is that you don't feel the edge between the neck and the laminate when your fingers wrap around.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

None of my guitars are uncomfortable, but looks like a neat idea nonetheless.

I wonder if under extreme conditions the wood would want to pop out of its bathtub. (how wrong does that sound, lol)

From what I can see, the top of the frets does indeed go to the edges of the neck, but looking at the graphic in the opening post, it appears that the fret tang does not (couldn't see the side of the neck in the demo vid). In other words, the tangs have to be undercut before being installed, just like when fretting or refretting a bound neck .... so a more complex task than refretting a traditional unbound Fender type neck.

I've owned and played quite a lot of guitars over the years, and never have i been able to feel the join between the neck and fretboard, so i don't see that as being a new, special selling-point.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

I don't normall like rosewood, but a maple neck with a channel bound rosewood board looks pretty baddass.

Re: Fender's New "Channel Bound" Fretboards

Could this be a way to use laminated fretboards without having to tell customers? Just a cynical thought that popped into my head.
