Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

EDITED:

Here's a quick change doing the AMS setting on Soundtoy's Microshift plugin.

Also tweaked EQ ever so slightly and added a touch of EMT140 plate reverb.

BIAS Rhoads EQ Reaper Test 2 (AMS)

Next I'll do triple tracking with the above settings.

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

The tone sounds very spot on. When I think of the original, it sounds a tad more open for lack of a better word, like there was a subtle reverb or delay on or added that gave it depth. I'm no recording expert, just using my untrained 80's era ears. I do love the tone and playing though.

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

Thanks - I've added a new clip which is the full Crazy Train tune with Randy on the left and me on the right.

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

BIAS's tone matching capabilities are really something. I've been meaning to try it out.

I didn't use the tone matching (not a big fan of that part), just my ears and research.

Emulated everything in his signal chain except for his (EDIT: Altec) speakers (don't have any iRs for those).

I use BIAS for the amp and occasionally an FX pedal, but 9 times out of 10 I don't use BIAS's speakers (use my own iRs) and I add further VSTs (Waves, etc) to build the tone.

After I do my Boston tone w/ BIAS vid, I'll do a vid for Randy's using the techniques I did here.

Impressive! Good job :)

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

I think it's time to send a demo CD to Ozzy and see if he needs a new guitarist. Sounds great.

I always thought that Randy used Altec 417s. Do you have any IRs for those?

Yeah that was a mis-type; I meant Altec 417-8Hs. No, don't have any, but according to my research (someone out there),
that full-range type speaker is supposed to be similar to JBL D120F (which I do have and which I used).

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

Sounds certainly in the spirit, but not spot on. Not buzzy or shrill enough haha

I've heard that as well. I've never actually heard an Altec 417 in person, but the construction is similar enough to a JBL D120F.

Exactly. The final touch is getting that "sparkle-shrill-buzz" in there which is undoubtedly provided by the Altecs, but that may be impossible.

...but that never stopped me! hahahahahahaha (crazy train laugh)

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

well done! could use a tad more air/top end - maybe a vintagey EQ plugin?

Can you locate an impulse for those weird speakers maybe?

Ownhammer has some, but I'm gonna study the freq response and tailor from there.

Re: Figured Out Randy Rhoads Tone

Here's a new one:

BIAS Rhoads EQ Reaper Test

Found out the chorus used on the album (aside from the double and sometimes triple [!] tracking) was the AMS DMX 15-80.

Emulated this with Soundtoys Microshift VST.
