Filling a collection gap…

As of late I’ve been feeling that I need to swap a bunch of guitars around & fill a “hole” in the collection or working instruments and I’m totally lost for the first time in years. I’m thinking that I want to end up with 6-7 instruments that can cover just about anything I’d encounter on a regular basis.

The idea is to end up with something ENTIRELY different then anything I already own. Maybe to find my unique voice as a player (yeah right! LOL) but more so that its just something I want to reach for & play all the time because it IS different.

Right now the collection includes;
’02 LP flame top w/ Duncan Alnico II’s
’03 LP double cut w/P90’s (stock)
’86 Custom Shop Melody Maker w/ a “period correct” ‘bucker
’05 Eric Johnson Strat
’03 Schetcer USA Tele w/ an Alnico II, SSL whatever & an SM1
’93 Hamer Diablo (24-fret shred bolt-on w/Floyd); PATB & Jazz
’04 PRS Swamp Ash Special w/ C5/ Vintage Rail & Jazz

There’s also a Dan-O baritone; Alverez acoustic (6-string, spruce & rosewood deal); and various other bits like the guitars for sale in my sig right now…but the ones above are the “core” of the trove.

I’m thinking that some sorta semi-hollow might be the way to go. If I don’t do that…I’m going to end up with something ENTIRELY different like a mandolin or lap-steel. I might also just sell the guitars I have & cash out but somehow I doubt it!

The forerunners are;
~Thinline Tele; Either Fender ’69 Mexi modded to hell or a Warmoth deal. Most likely will be loaded with a Little ’59 or “stock” overwound Tele bridge pickup & Filtertron neck.
~Epiphone Sheraton II; found a new one that I was really diggin’ on until I picked up a new $2500 335. The Epis still cool & I think I’d be happy with it for a long long time…but it DOES sound “plinky” next to the ‘real deal’ which is more nasal in a good way. Playability was almost equal…setups would even ‘em out.
~Schecter, Fender or other electric 12-string. I played a 2-bucker Schecter the other day that I was really diggin' and I don't own a 12-string...
~Another acoustic of some type.

I want to keep it to under $1K but other then that I dunno. There's no set criteria right now.

I produce & mix records for a living...the guitars I have get used on gigs & for my own writing but they also get pressed into battle on other peoples records so it's nice to have things that other people aren't going to have...like a Thinline Tele w/Trons...

LOL

a ric, preferably a 12 string ... but you'll have to go above $1K i bet

Re: Filling a collection gap…

this is part of the reason I'm doing a hollow T project with a Bigsby and 'Trons ... to have something different from a regular tele/ strat/ LP

plus I liked the tones on Finn Brothers' and Son Volt's latest CDs, which feature Gretsch tones ..

nothing wrong with the old Beatle tone of a Gretsch through an AC 30 type amp ;)

The Schecter E/A hollowbody is really good sounding with alot of tonal options...but it ain't a twelve string.

I'm thinking you have to look REALLY hard to find a gap in your current collection.....that's a nice array in the sonic arsenal you've got.

You need a 335-ish guit.

Go japanese to get the cost where ya need it to be....Tokai, Epi Elite/Japan, Greco, Burny, etc etc..etc.

How about a nice quality Acoustic. You have a nice collection of electrics. A good acoustic would be a good addition to what you have.

That's pretty hip! Price seems fair too but I'm ULTRA picky about guitars & really hate ordering stuff. I don't so much about finish or "sloppy" inlays/binding and the like...it's ALL about wood, feel & how the plank resonsates with ME.

Anyway...I have been thinking that something in the "thinline/335" or jazzbox vein might be a good alternative tone that I don't already have. I also dig Tele's a lot too which how the thinline Tele idea came to be.

A few days ago I played a kick-ass '78 Les Paul pro/dlx and I almost traded in the red Strat, ESP & few other things towards it...but while pondering if it was worth it (@ $1600 it IS!) & playing it again, I came to the conclusion that if I buy another stringed instrument at this point it needs to be really different & not just another variation on a theme. I'm sure even Slash gets bored with 80+ different Pauls around.

Well, maybe not! But I'm sure that any of 'em would do at any time...

Adding another acoustic might be a good idea, I've always wanted a '000' body guitar but when I was looking a few years ago I couldn't find ANYTHING under $1400 that I REALLY liked. The benchmark is a 70s era D-18 or D-28...they were either too expensive or beat down & lifeless. I got the Alverez because I was tired of looking & it was "good enough". I still like that guitar a lot but it's not a "killer" acoustic or anything. Thankfully I know guys with things like Santa Cruz, Collings, old Guilds & Gibsons in their stable that I can borrow if beg enough! I'm still hoping to stumble onto some AMAZING pawnshop acoustic for like $200 that destroys everything.

I've also pondered the idea of getting a lap steel or mandolin...something TOTALLY different & not just another gee'tar. I always plink around on that stuff when its around & it might be nice to have them for "parts"...overdubbing lap steel or whatever on the bridge of song here & there. Things like that & the baritone are great, I leave 'em out on stands and invaribly someone will pick 'em up & come up with parts to add to their songs that they might not have come up with on a 'regular' guitar.

Anyway, NONE of this is going to happen until the guitars I'm selling find new homes!

So keep those ideas coming!

I vote either a Strat (or Tele) with active pickups like the Duncan Live Wires or a National Resonator guitar like a steel bodied Delphi.

+1

A Rickenbacker or a Gretsch would be a nice addition.
