Finally done it!

No more boss in my effects chain! The last remaining boss pedal on my pedalboard is my tuner, and it's coming out of the tuner out on my volume pedal so I have no more Boss buffers in my effects chain. "Tone is good!"

Re: Finally done it!

Cool! That's what I'm aiming to do. The TU2 is a real tone sucker, when I checked all my pedals to see what all the fuss was about I couldn't believe how much Boss pedals changed/ sucked your tone! I need to change the tuner, chorus and delay... won't be anythime soon though. Nice one.

Re: Finally done it!

It's pedalboard Spring cleaning! LOL

I'm figuring out ways of updating my board, but doing it without spending a bunch of cash.

It's really hard to let go of the L6 Delay, but that new EH Memory Man is looking good.
It's easier to let go of the L6 Modulator, but it'll have to be replaced by something like a Duncan Shape Shifter, H&K Rotosphere, and Moog Phaser.

Re: Finally done it!

man a rotosphere would be AMAZING..but they're a bit pricey for my budget right now...I'm kinda broke...dating this new girl, plus a few things I've bought..lol...I'll probably eventually replace my Voodoo Lab Tremolo with a Duncan Shape Shifter.

Re: Finally done it!

Can you fill a newbie in on why boss suck your tone? And what type of pedals/effects don't suck your tone? Thanks

Re: Finally done it!

As long as you don't run very long cables, no buffers should be fine, but I wouldn't recommend it. You'll lose more tone by using all true bypass than having at least one pedal in the chain with a buffer to push the signal along to the amp.

Re: Finally done it!

IMHO, there'e nothing really "wrong" with boss buffers, unless you have too many boss pedals in the chain
1 or 2 in your chain wouldn't hurt... in fact, it would be better.

in general, 1 good buffer is practically essential in any pedal chain.

The only thing I know of for sure I just learned from Christian (the guy who invented fire). The Boss buffers do NOT play very well with germanium based effects. The buffers add treble which makes old school fuzz tones, and treble booster sound overly bright and harsh.

Re: Finally done it!

Ok... So Boss buffers are not necessarily the Devil, but depending on what effects they are coupled with you could get some less than stellar tones?

But a buffer is not a bad thing to have in the FX Chain?

How do pedal companies like L6, Voodoo Labs, Electro Harmonix or MXR compare? How much do they buffer the signal and what not? I know there are a lot more companies, but I'm trying to think of some more common names.

Each company's buffer sounds a bit different I think. The Line 6 was fairly neutral I thougt. My EH Small Stone is true bypass IIRC. My DMM is very much buffered though. I get a bit of delay ghosting all the time, but I dig the effect. The cool thing about the DMM is that you can choose how much juice is coming out of it.

This is usually due to placing the buffered pedal before the fuzz/treble booster. If your chain is TB->Fuzz->other effects(including buffered stuff), you shouldn't have any problem. I have found that if you drive a fuzz face type with a buffered pedal it will sound bright, loud and will refuse to clean up with the guitar volume knob.

Re: Finally done it!

yeah, my mjm london fuzz (germanium version) is the very 1st pedal in my chain and i have no problems with it at all.

as for trying to get rid of all your boss pedals....ive seen a guy play whose board was composed of possibly every boss pedal ever made and he had an awesome sound. The bands name was Nu-bru if any of you are new brunswick, NJ locals btw

That's what Christian said. Thing is what about the tuner?

Re: Finally done it!

Buffers and some old school fx pedals like fuzz and germanium boost pedals don't do well SOMETIMES...if you run the buffered pedal AFTER the other effect in question you'll be fine.

Im also gonna go ahead and say that Boss buffers (as well as some others) don't "suck tone" much if at all...

Re: Finally done it!

I'm gonna put a new picture of my pedalboard up real soon...it's great...I do have one buffered pedal still in the mix though, so I think I should be all good.
