Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

Jomo's Nimions
... and of all things, it's a Super Distortion S.

This pickup was not even remotely on my radar when I was hunting for a new bridge pickup. By all conventional wisdom, I was looking for something PAF-ish, to balance better with the Texas Specials in the neck and middle. However, due to opportunity via a trade, I wound up with the single sized Super D.

Haven't spent a bunch of time or gotten it perfectly adjusted yet, but so far, I'm really digging it. As-is, it's out of phase with the middle TS, so I need to crack it open and deal with that. Before I do, I'm trying to decide if I want to add a push/pull or mini-switch for splitting, or just set it to auto-split on position 4 (I can do that with a standard Fender 5-way, right?).

In the meantime, I've been having lots of screaming whammy harmonics fun. Anybody who says you need a Floyd for that doesn't know how to setup a 2 point Fender :)

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

Yup. You can auto-split with a standard Fender 5 way. How close is it to a normal Super D?

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

Same thing , S means Strat size ( They're great + Used one for 12 years / Now Chopper a little more well rounded with good output as well

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

The S-size really sounds the same as a full size SuperD?

Not really IMO. It's in the same ballpark as a Hot Rails or Fast Track; really big and fat sounding but not the same as a full size 'bucker. It isn't unlike the JB Jr. or Little '59 in that respect.

As far as the DiMarzio single size 'buckers go, I like the Tone Zone S better but the SuperD isn't bad.

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

Man, every time I come across a thread about the Super D "S", it's someone being blown away by it.

My understanding (from reviews) is also that it sounds a bit different than the full size Super D, but lots of players actually like the "S" version better than the regular humbucker!

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

It's been a long time since I tried a regular Super D. In general, it does not sound as full as a humbucker, but it's definitely a lot fatter than the Texas Special single that it replaced. This is my first go-round with a single sized humbucker and two singles, and I think I prefer it to full sized with singles. The output is higher, but it doesn't sound like I picked up a different guitar.

The output difference isn't that big of a deal, as knocking the volume back to 6 or 7 brings it down to close enough to the Texas Specials. After this, I'm definitely gonna try out some other single sized humbuckers.

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

Good to know that it's nice and fat. I like the Tone Zone T bridge.
Was considering a Tone Zone S but now also thinking about the Strat--sized SuperD.

If you basically like how your Strat sounds, but wish the bridge position was a humbucker, but don’t want it to sound like you switched to a different guitar, I think it’s a good choice.

Re: Finally got a 'bucker for my Strat bridge...

Tone Zone = Ceramic , Suped D = Ceramic , Chopper = Ceramic ( Chopper is a Great Pickup - btw . I use Full size Tone Zone for main Drop C Tune Ax , dont know how they would work in the smaller config cause the bottom end is too Loose on the full size for Standard tune ~ For Me . I should probably mention that I pull mids out a bit - running more Bass + Treble in Drop and Standard

One of the guitarists in the band Thursday had one of those in his SG. Remember seeing that on the last page of GW when they used to show those cool cartoon rig breakdowns.

It was a custom shop full size 'bucker that was supposed to sound like a Hot Rails.
