Finally lost my Bad Monkey virginity yesterday (Box of Rock content also)

Anywhere other than a guitar forum, that subject line would probably seem extremely strange.

I tried a pile of drive pedals yesterday. The ones I didn't find that impressive were:

- Fulltone Robin Trower Overdrive: pretty standard TS-808 clone.
- Maxon OD808: see above.
- Visual Sound Route 66: see above + a decent compressor.

I can't even express how bored I am of TS clones. Ironic considering the pedal I built falls into that category, I know, but I have yet to find a TS derivative that sounds as lively and useful as the FTL Drive/Raptor. I'm not trying to brag - it's an honest fact.

The two that I did really like were a ZVex Box of Rock and the lowly Digitech Bad Monkey. The key with both pedals was finding the sweet spot where they really shine.

The Box of Rock has easily the best crunch tone I've ever heard from a pedal. The drive and tone controls had a ton of range in them, and it cleaned up nicely with the guitar's volume knob or light pick attack. It also has a clean boost which is completely useless to me unfortunately, but it does the job it's supposed to.

On the whole, awesome pedal, and worthy of the hype. I think I'm going to pick up a Distortron, which is the BoR minus the boost and with a couple of switches to reduce low end sludge (good idea in a band setting) and increase gain (not really interested in that, but ok).

The Monkey has a pretty stellar reputation considering the price, so I figured I owed it a shot. Right off the bat, I noticed the bypass tone was not the best for dynamics. I guess expecting a nice buffer in a cheap pedal was a bit unrealistic. When I dialed everything in about 50%, I was disappointed. It sounded boxy and lifeless. I turned the Low and High controls all the way up, and that's when it really opened up. Suddenly my tone was fat and powerful without being compressed or buzzy.

I got the best tone out of this pedal with the low and high all the way up and the gain at around 10:00. Depending on how hard I dug in, I got anywhere from fat clean to growling tweed tone at that setting. Through a high gain amp, it fattened up my power chords and actually added definition to tight riffing. I was really impressed.

Here's the thing: as soon as I deviated from the "ideal" settings, the Bad Monkey immediately sounded like a cheap overdrive pedal. The good news is that the one workable setting I found works really, really well, and accomplishes exactly what I want from a low gain overdrive.

I think the Distortron and the Bad Monkey (running inside a good bypass box) would make a great combo for my pedal board.

cool write up

does the monkey do something that the FTL / raptor already does? or is it filling a niche that eludes the FTL?

Thanks for the time and the writeup....I love the BOR and I'm glad I listened to Christian's review about this pedal....I Must also say that I also enjoyed the clips I heard on your FTL...It's kinda funny...I have a modded TS 808 on my board, and it's probably the pedal I use the least....

We're very lucky that there are guys like yourself on the forums with great ears and great minds!

Re: Finally lost my Bad Monkey virginity yesterday (Box of Rock content also)

i reckon most pedals have only one ideal setting. Trouble is most pedals ideal setting is still pretty lame. There are only a few that really sound good.

Well, the FTL/Raptor is basically a Tube Screamer on steroids. It has great mid-range crunch and snarl and a big dynamic range. It excels if you have an amp that's just on the verge of breaking up - it will push it into fat, beefy overdrive. I think it works a lot better with clean amps than the original TS does. It's also great at making an already overdriven amp sing. I like to use mine for that Santana-ish liquid lead tone on the Stiletto's high gain channel.

The Bad Monkey, on the other hand, doesn't have as big of a mid emphasis as the FTL (and all TS derivatives, actually). I think it's more in the same category as a Boss BD-2 or OD-3. It is great at bumping your amp up a notch or two on the gain spectrum, and the way I had it dialed in it was also adding a lot of "girth" to the tone in both clean and high gain rigs. You could probably also use it as a solo boost, and I'm sure it would work very well for that.

Re: Finally lost my Bad Monkey virginity yesterday (Box of Rock content also)

Interesting. I had contrary experience when upgrading from a Bad Monkey to a Visual Sound Route 808. I found the VS to have much more complexity in the midrange and just to sound better overall...I'm just gonna assume it's because VS is using better components and buffers. The Bad Monkey's tone-sucking buffer and "versatility" (even tho you and me and everybody else i know just runs the EQ wide open with level and gain to taste) makes it an okay Tubescreamer copy but never really anything more than that.

All that being said, with a new Bad Monkey only being like $50 and a new Route 808 running twice that...i can see why a lot of people would just settle for the BM and go out drinking. I got my Route 808 for a pretty stupid low price and it's exactly what I wanted -- a green overdrive pedal with a solution for the bass-cut you get on traditional green overdrive pedals. That little 'Bass Boost' switch goes a long way for me. :smokin:

As for the Box of Rock...that's the only pedal i need. Any loud clean amp and a Box of Rock = awesome tone. I used to think i needed an additional amp to give me the kind of crunch tone i wanted -- my 68 Bassman sounds great clean and awesome cranked but never that cutting crunchy midrange that i love so much in sweet EL34 heads. The BoR gives me tons of it. Plus the clean boost which is like giving my head the preamp gain knob it never had -- awesome awesome awesome when everything's running on full.

Re: Finally lost my Bad Monkey virginity yesterday (Box of Rock content also)

picked up a BM for my bro, and have yet to mail it to him. I goofed with it first of course. It's pretty cool, but I'm not going to be sad to see it go. between a super OD and a TS clone, I've got the whole TS/booster thing covered. not sure why people "collect" various TS-type pedals.

I've been diggin on my jackhammer though, OD side is just great, from low gain up to full. More than a booster, it's like my whole sound right now (but we're still in the honeymoon phase of course)

Yea.. If it wasn't for the bypass tone suck I would keep my Monkey on the pedal board. One of these days I will get my front of amp pedals looped and under midi control.

Re: Finally lost my Bad Monkey virginity yesterday (Box of Rock content also)

For the money, the BM is a pretty good pedal. But I spent a good hour A/B'ing it against the new Hardwire TS Clone I bought- and the difference is night and day (in favor of the HWOD). The HW is more complex, harmonically rich, and musical than the BM is. Of course it's twice as much $, but now I enjoy using a TS type pedal again, whereas the BM honeymoon ended pretty quick. Not to mention the TB circuit, quieter operation, and far better build quality...so..

I'll agree the full on EQ setting on the BM is a very cool tone and probably the most "organic" sounding.

You will LOVE the Distortron RD :bigthumb:

I'm about to go love my distortron a little bit right now.

Mmm distortron baby

Here's a linear boost pedal that's grabbed my attention lately, if you're just looking to add more beef to an amp without saturating it too much. I'm sure it sounds best pushing an already overdriven amp.

Way Huge Angry Troll.....Fists of Fury! haha

That's pretty sweet.

I've been doing some research to see if I can come up with a nice, high quality pedal that can do the Bad Monkey thing without the **** buffer or useless tone controls. So far the MI Audio Blues Boy Deluxe is looking very good.
