Finally, my first time with tubes

Took a seven hour drive to Lansing Michigan. While wife was busy I took a stop in over at Marshal's Music. Actually had amps in it (Local stores where I'm from can be a joke).

Prior to this, the only tube amp I've ever played was my Airline 1x12 combo...no real preamp ..just volume and tone knob...and I might have mentioned before, it is a fire-hazzard so I cant really use it on the altar or stage.

Anyways, They mostly just had the peavey amps set up..but whatever, it was a start...(was too afraid to breath on the VHT and ORANGE amps...the price tag had too many digits in it).

Triple X...yea a metal amp..cool but ..more than what I'd want to pay for what it is.

Then,

6505+ Really nasty but I loved it.

and finally,

Windsor Not as aggressive as the 6505 obviously but DUDE!! UNBELEIVABLE for the pirce!!!! Very versatile toneful

Question 1:

I dont understand Peavey ..why charge $499 for A supreme XL, or $599 for a XXL and only $399 for a freaking 100 Watt EL34 Tube head??? (Windsor)

Am I missing something!?

It was just over a quarter the price of the 6505 right next to it.

I mean with a price like that they could practicly replace their entire transtube line. hehe

Question 2:

what is the difference between a 6505 and a 5150, are these totally different sounds or are they related in some way? I've never played a 5150 but I have enough recordings of others to at least somewhat know a little bit about it to compare...hard to tell though when you cant listen to them right next to each other....

Re: Finally, my first time with tubes

Peavey's prices is all marketing....XL and XXLs are multi-channel "nu-metal" voiced amps...the Windsor is for workin men...(cue Rush)

the 5150 got its name from Eddie Van Halen 'cuz it's his signature amp. Peavey had to change the name to 6505 when they lost the rights to make his signature amp....same amp, different numbers.

If I were thinking of getting any of those...and regularly played on an altar...i'd get a Fender Blues Jr. or an Epiphone Valve Jr. Peavey's got its sites on teenage punk rockers and metalheads who say the F word a lot.

I think the Windsor is Peavey's first Chinese made amp, and that would account for the price difference between the others, which I think are US made.
I haven't played the Windsor yet, but for that price, it seems like a no brainer.

Re: Finally, my first time with tubes

i have been wanting to try a Windsor for a while now!!!! i love my 5150 a hell of a lot but always looking for something F---ing different.... ha ha ha just kidding... I use the 5150 for classic rock... not metal or punk.... ya it is full of metal like gain but play with the dials and you can go anywhere from the Stones to Zep, and then to Sabbath right up to Megadeth.... so it covers a lot more ground then just metal...

But for the price the Windsor has me thinking....

I really want to try a Windsor...
