FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

First of all, sorry guys. I had to do it.
I got myself a TSL60.
On top of a Framus CS 2x12 cab with Vintage 30s.
And all I can say is...
THIS THING ROCKS! HARD! :headbang:

I haven't had the chance to take pics yet, but basically it looks like this...

After unpacking it, I instantly faced the problem of not being able to get that aluminium thingy (whatever it is good for) off my V1 preamp tube to replace it with a Sovtek LPS. Thanks to ErikH this didn't hold me off too long though...

Then came the moment of truth... ok first came the on switch followed by a tube warming waittime... but then came the moment of truth!!!! (As I am a pisser when it comes to volume, I had the master volume at about 2 when turning on). But what was that? No sound at all coming out... (except the hum from the tubes which is there as soon as you turn the on switch on)...
I turned the master up to about 8... nothing... wtf was going on?
ok then I realised there is another seperate volume knob for clean and od channels :smack:
From that point on, I liked my new amp ;)
After finding out what those other things like presence, deep and shift do, I played with the different gain settings and stuff...
Now after 2 hours of playing and turning all knobs about 10000 times I have found 2 things that aren't good on this amp:

1) If you turn the gain on the lead channel too high 7-10, it's quite noisy... but if you consider how much gain you have then, it is obvious this has to happen... I'll never use that much gain ever anyway... but that comes later

2) I can't play the clean channel. Impossible. If I'd do, the neighbours would instantly think I'm ghey because this thing sounds so beautiful :(

THE SOUND: :headbang:
Ok so I basically fiddled around a bit... a big bit... with all the controls, and so far this is what I found out:

Clean:
Sounds quite Fenderish when you put in a bit more bass and turn those mids down a bit. Other than that, I haven't played too much in it I have to admit.

Crunch:
My Favourite! Badass quite modern sounding channel, but you can also get some older hard rock sounds out of it. Sounds great at all levels of gain.

Lead:
Gain galore... you wouldn't expect it, but when you turn the gain down to about 3 this one truly has the vintage Marshall vibe... AC/DC sound pure. I didn't like that channel too much with higher gain though... sounded a bit strange... but maybe I just have to find the right EQ settings for that yet...

Then there are those extra thingys:

Reverb: Uhm yes... reverb... I try to avoid that effect... dunno... I never liked reverb too much

Presence: I always have it at 5... gives the best balance there

Deep switch: Like the name suggests, gives you a bit of a deeper bass responce (I think it's only for the clean channel), but I think it's nice without

Shift switch: Scoops out the mids for OD. Not exactly my taste... makes the sound somehow a bit liveless...

As for volume settings, I havent tried so much out there... master at 5, channel specific ones at 3... so far so good

Do I have to add something? Ah yes, this thing is heavy as hell... I had to drag it home on foot and it wasn't funny at all...

thanks for reading

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

I haven't played one of those in a long time. Last time I did I wasn't totally impressed but I also didn't have a lot of time to fiddle with it either.

It's always fun getting new toys. :)

Rock On ~ Kac

This is the problem most guys have with this amp I think... I was quite confused by the many knobs and how they work together with... or against... each other... definately not an amp where you plug in and find your sound in a sec, but an amp that can deliver tons of different sounds.

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

New stuff rocks....good for you Brutha:beerchug:

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

Cool score. Glad you are so happy with it. There is nothing in this world like good ole Marshall crunch. You'll find a ton of new settings over the comming weeks and months. Just remember not to get TOO complacent with setting, and continue to tweak until you know it inside out.

Congrats.

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

Thanks for all your comments so far friends!

So today I tried out the footswitch that came along with the amp.
5 Switches for all three channels, reverb & fx loop

Seems to be working pretty neat, no real lag when switching between channels and no clicking or anything (at least no amplified clicking :smack:)

Another thing I found out is that the "Marshalls are the Humbucker's best friend" saying is quite true... my '59 just sounds like pure Rock 'n Roll trough this amp... I actually thought I would have to replace it whenI get this amp, but these two are a great combination! Gotta get something brighter & humbuckery for the neck too.

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

Congrads on the new score!

have fun with your new toy!

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

Awesome. Probably too many knobs for me, but it sounds like a pretty good amp. Great review.

Re: FINALLY! My first tube amp. (Marshall content & little review)

hmm

300 euro is REALY not bad for that cab ..

i paid around 150 for the speakers alone .. and the box is pissing me off cos the ******* carpenter didnt make the front baffle solid and the glue loosened and now there are gaps between the wood pieces

My cab seems to be of good quality as far as I can tell... Framus is actually quite well known to have good craftmanship at quite low prices.

Good to see another tone success story - helped along by 3 of Seymour's best, of course! It's also cool to show that even a Squier Strat, with the right surroundings, can make people happy...

that i agree.. but i didnt know those cabs are just a measly 300 .. if i knew that (sice the bums at the local shop couldnt tell me.. even though they got a framus dealership) i would have bought the cab instead of going through getting my own built
