Finally tried blackouts.

After ditching all my EMG's about 6 years ago, I never bothered to try blackouts, because I didn't think they would be that much better. Regardless of how much better people said they were, I figured they would still have the negative characteristics of actives. I was definitely wrong about that. They clean up very well and handle low-gain very well also with a nice pick attack at high gain that doesn't sound like steel wool in a blender. These were the original blackouts in a neck-through agile 8-string.

Man this agile is a beast. Don't let your daughter close to those thick and heavy strings. What if some string break?

I could pull a truck out of the mud with those strings. LOL

Re: Finally tried blackouts.

nice 8-string.

will you be trying the Tosin signature Fishman Fluence pups?
I'm actually borrowing this one to see if i want to buy it, but the 30" scale is a bit excessive for me.

It definitely makes me consider custom-ordering a 27" 7-string equivalent from Agile though.

IMO 27" is the absolute best scale for a 7-string.
I've only spent time on a few 7's (never an 8), but to me the 27" is the perfect balance between tension and play.

I find 27 to be just slightly too long for me. I love the schecter 26.5.

Re: Finally tried blackouts.

I'm eyeing up a new set of EMGs for my Jackson 7 string.

I like the tightness and midrange growl they have on low tunings and also the really nice solo tones I get from them with my Marshalls. But my experience is largely limited to 6 string variants. I like them stock too - the 18v mod didn't improve anything for me. Maybe it's just my ears.

In what way would Blackouts - or any other actives - be an improvement?

You may have to compare apples to apples...I don't think you can say 'this brand sounds this way' and 'this sounds another'. Each brand has many models. We have many models that have very different EQ curves. Also, we have our Blackouts Preamp system which adds an active preamp to any passive pickup.

Re: Finally tried blackouts.

My personal experience with Blackouts is this. I had a Schecter Solo with them. I did not like them. I just could not get a clean or dirty sound that I liked out of them. Just one opinion. I have had some guitars with EMG's over the years and always liked them. Again. Just me. Not knocking any brand or anyone else for that matter.

Re: Finally tried blackouts.

I should reiterate that AHB-1's are the ones i tried.
